The Day of David's Farewell

(DyN)
Update
That was it.
The last singles match of David's career.
This time Rafa prevailed 6-3, 6-4.
Not that it really matters.
The doubles with Nole and Pico wasn't broadcasted/streamed, unfortunately.

So this was really it...

All about David's farewell tomorrow.

(Getty Images; montage by VD)

For the last few years, this was how every post about David's next match began here on Vamos David
- with matching pics of him and his respective opponent. Today, I decided to make another set.
For old times' sake and because it's the last opportunity I'll get...

Today, David bids farewell.
To the Argentine crowd, to his fans, to his fellow players and to his career as a tennis player that has shaped his life so far.
These last few days, during the press conferences David often talked about how there are different stages in everyone's life.
And for him, a new one will begin tomorrow. But today, one last time he'll walk onto the court. To play a last match against Rafa and then also a bit of doubles with Nole and Pico.
Only then will this stage, this chapter of his life be closed.
And hopefully, it's going to be the big party David wants.

The event itself is scheduled to begin at 4pm local. TV coverage already starts at 3.30pm local (as you can see on the poster).
But while we got lucky with the official streams for the last two events, this time we'll have to rely on 'unofficial' ones.

Therefore: If you find a stream please link it in the comments.
Edit: So far, we have three working streams, links in the sidebar.

  1. Glad you continued the matching side by sides, Julia The big day we all knew was coming is finally here. Going to be some sadness for sure. But when I think back to Thursday night and remember how happy, relaxed and proud David was while toting little Sossie around after the match, how can I really be sad. David's where he needs to be now. While searching for a live stream I discovered the following article. If I forget to say it in the aftermath of today's match, I want to thank you, Julia, for all you've done. As the leader of the VamosDaviders, you rock.

  2. Thank you. :) Well, it's the end of an era. And not just for David. I think it'll probably take a while to get rid of some old habits, like my daily look around the Argentine sports press...
But I think he's doing the right thing. And that he's comfortable with his decision, even if it's going to be an emotional day today.
The article, well, I prefer the one by Gantman. ;) And I'm still going to write my own version.

  3. Here's a pic of David at La Rural. He and Rafa held another clinic there, apparently.

  5. Thanks, I'll add it to the sidebar. :)

  6. I think we all agree that he's making the right decision and that even though it sucks for us, we are happy to see him happy.
I know I'm glad you guys found some streams. I'm gonna miss this blog and the people here so much!
So more wine today Julia? My plan is watch, get my heart broken, then go shopping to make it all better :p

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yeah, some more wine. But not too much (like Thursday...). ;) It's true that my attitude towards David has changed over the years. But of course I'm going to miss VD and everyone here. Though the blog will be here a little longer, it's not going to close tomorrow. :)

  8. Hi everyone, making sure that unofficial stream will work for me! We just can't miss the farewell!!!
Talk to you all later :)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hi there. I hope it works, it does here for me. But they're still showing the Simpsons. It always gets later than planned... :)

  10. I'm having a hard time getting rid of the ugly guy ad! It wouldn't even let me go to a full screen. Help?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Stream 1 works for me. :)

Camilia - I had an ad I couldn't get rid of. Clicking on bottom left corner did it in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Which one are you using? These sites are difficult (and not always safe) but the only chance to watch today...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I know they are awful, keep opening all those ads and some are indecent! That's why I kept my old laptop to use for unofficial streams.

    2. But in a way, it's coming full circle. When I think back to all those crappy justin.tv streams... Where you could only guess what happened, based on the reaction of the crowd. lol

      Delete
    3. By which I mean - I used to watch David's matches on lots of very bad streams. Therefore full circle.

      Delete
    4. lol They drove me nuts! I was like: What happened? Why? When? ha?

      Delete
    5. Yeah, compared to those streams, this one is rather formidable. :)

  16. Streams working good for me and haha yeh some of the olden days the streams were absolutely shocking. I remember when I was a kid watching nalby in 02/03/04 i didnt know what live streaming was so would always 'watch' the match on the scoreboard covering up the minute and when it changed that wdve meant a point happened. Ah they were the days, dw do anythin 4 him

    ReplyDelete
  17. How do u get the telefe chat box out the way?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm not even sure there already were live streams back in 02/03/04. Just the good old scoreboard. Yep, "watching" David's match on the scoreboard... Well, that's something I'm not going to miss. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hhaha exactly Julia, classic times. Justin tv was the first streaming i came across. Thank god we foudn them because other than master series/grandlams we wouldve still been stuck with the scoreboard haha even tho we still had to with some matches no coverage lol. Reckon Rafa will make it 3 sets today or give David a straight sets victory?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Curses - my stream just stopped.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Same here :( Does anyone have a stream that's still working?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, looks like they're all dead.

    ReplyDelete
  23. All of them stopped! Seriously!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh no! I thought it would just be me - and maybe fixable. :(

    This is very cruel.

    ReplyDelete
  25. this works for me right now:

    6. In that respect I'll remain entirely true to David. ;)

    2. You're welcome, George. I'm actually using Denise's link. :) But they both worked for me.

It's not the quality of the Cordoba one. And the Santiago one was fantastic. In the Cordoba match, you really felt the wonderful atmosphere. I'm not getting that now. I know it's not so close to a "home crowd" as Cordoba, but I think it's just the stream doesn't give the full impression. It's certainly a big crowd.

      Delete
    3. Ah okayy man hahaha. Oh rightt yeh cool. Ohmy i 100% agree with that, u cant hear the atmosphere as much, but still its good, not bad quality, good tennis, even tho rafa does seem a bit more serious than the other day lool. Good to see David having a bit of a laugh too. Istabraq do u live in London?

The line judge definitely exaggerated and milked it, anyway.

    4. ur so lucky! Proper tried to get tickets for that but had an official exam the next day so mum didnt. Did see him during the week with Malisse and Vasselin. Yeh defo he milked it. 53. It was a match you wouldn't expect. Or else I wouldn't be asking.

    ReplyDelete
  54. 191!
I never would have guessed that - though I remember the match.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ohhh thats v interesting! Understandable tho coz of the long delay that day

    ReplyDelete
  56. I don't think I was here commenting that day. Noubar said loads! He SHOULD remember. Lol!

    ReplyDelete
  57. We usually had more comments for matches that were not streamed. And yeah, that this one was postponed for several hours also helped. Plus the memory of the gruesome match against Troicki the year before.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Well, there are plenty of things I'm going to miss. And a couple of things I won't.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yeh exactly Julia. U reckon we can get past the 191 tonight?

    ReplyDelete

  66. I don't think Pico remembered to consult with David on what colour outfit to wear. :0

  77. I have found a clip of David's speech to the crowd (once more with Sossie on his arm). I'll transcribe it tomorrow.
A bit harsh, I think, having to do another presser afterwards. But maybe the strategy is to have him do so many pressers that he'll be nothing but relieved when it's all over.
