Copa Argentina - David Is Back

(@carlagonzabu)
Update II
It was an entertaining match with some spectacular rallies, as well as lots of banter and laughs shared by David and Nicolas Almagro. But in the end, his Spanish buddy was too strong for David. So Almagro won the match 7-6(6), 6-4 and that means the Copa Argentina is over for David, who will now soon begin with his pre-season training for next year.

Edit: More on Monday.

After the heavy rains on Thursday and the last-minute addition of an extra session on Friday, the stands were not exactly packed, yesterday. But those who were fortunate enough to spend the afternoon at the BALTC not only got to see David's return, they were also treated to what was by all accounts a great perfomance from him. Earning him a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Today, in his second match at the Copa Argentina, David will face Nicolas Almagro. And since Almagro defeated Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-3 last night, the winner of their encounter will advance to the final (against either Pico or Gilles Simon). But most importantly - today we'll finally get to see David play as this time there's going to be a stream.

Update
Here's a clip with a couple of points from yesterday's match and a happy David, saying in his post-match interview that this is a great start for him after such a long time, that he's already focusing on the next season and that playing in Argentina and experiencing the support from his home crowd always means a lot to him.

A few words from David, after his match yesterday:

He feels great, it's a difficult stage of the year for the players, with this season over and the pre-season for next year about to begin, so they're all a bit tired. But exhibition matches are never really as exhausting as real matches. It was a nice match against a difficult opponent, who plays fast and has very flat strokes. That makes it difficult to find your rhythm. But all in all it was a good match and he's feeling good.
- And hopefully, he also will, today.

  5. Hi there. :)
They just complimented each other and Almagro said their most memorable match was the one at Rome, a little joke (David lost that one rather badly).

  6. They've done an interview like that (in the car, like at RG) with David as well. I'll post/translate it later.

    2. Yep. Had to find the right stream. Was fighting off lots of pop up ads after futbol. Not quite like a Masters event. Lots of good humor.

    3. Yeah, Almagro apparently in a bit of a playful mood.

  18. I know it's only an exho, but I think David has finally purged the residue from Queen's Club, which to me plagued him the rest of his season. It's safe to say, David can still play. Almagro is no slouch. He can beat anybody on tour, except maybe the top five. David looked energized and alive. Really good to see. I'm pumped for the new year.

  19. Well, I thought the same after their exho match at Boodles...
But anyway, yeah, it was great to see him like that, enjoying himself but also playing freely and really going for his shots at times. Yep, he can still play. And what's more important - he still wants to play. :)

    1. You are always right! That's indeed the most important thing. He got us really worried in the past few months :p

      Delete
    2. Yeah, he sure did... That's why it's so great to see him having fun on court. And after all - it's an exho. ;)

  20. I missed out on the match due to Internet issues, my alarm set was okay for one :(
reading your comments, I'm happy that David played a good match, and Almagro is a tough one, looks like the score is not bad too and they had fun :) will read Julia's report, and thank you guys for your comments :)

    1. Um, I don't really write reports about exhos. Those are the only matches where I don't take notes but just watch and enjoy them - sorry.

But what I can tell you is that David served for the first set at 5-4, got broken again, had two (I think) set points in the tiebreak but couldn't convert. His serve was pretty bad at first, percentage in the 30s, five (I think) DFs but then got better in set 2. He hit some great shots, some very nice winners, also off the forehand) but Almagro was just better, more consistent and with too much firepower for him. Still, it was a fun match, and there was a point where David hit 2 tweeners in a row. :)
