David's first ever attempt to play a tournament directly after a Davis Cup tie has ended in the quarterfinal with a defeat against Filippo Volandri, who won 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. After the first set, Volandri managed to raise his level, putting David under pressure with his excellent defense and forcing him to take more risks. One of the reasons (along with his movement) that David made plenty of unforced errors in this match, much to his own chagrin.
But David fought on, just like he did in the first-round match - only that this time, it wasn't enough. In his own words:
I think Volandri played a very good match. I had many chances in the third set but I wasn't able to take advantage. I was a break down [in the third], I recovered it and at 4-4 I had two break points but I didn't convert them and that's how the match slipped from my hands. But I insist, he played a great match. He hit very good shoots from all over the court and that kept me rather out of balance. (Source.)Next up for David is now his home tournament, the Copa Claro at the BALTC in Buenos Aires. The draw will be made later today.
