Davis Cup R1 - Surprise! David plays doubles

Source: DavisCup.com (Paul Zimmer)

Update: Argentina have wrapped up the tie now 3-0. David/Schwank made a two sets to love comeback to defeat Haas/Petzschner: 3-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4. More to come soon.

There was a last minute line-up change.

It is now Nalbandian/Schwank vs Haas/Petzschner.  It looks like the Argentine team are taking this doubles match seriously, even though they are up 2-0.

I would have thought that David was past that stage of his career where he plays singles on the opening day, then doubles the next, but clearly Martin Jaite does things differently to Tito Vazquez.

  1. I half expected this decision. Surely the Argentines are going for broke, throwing in Nalbandian in the hope of winning the tie 3-0. Then David's work would be done, and he wouldn't even have to play on Sunday.

  2. They are not looking to sharp out there, hopefully the 2nd set will be better.

  3. not really surprised as well, after the 2-0 lead it's pretty normal that they want to close it out today, if possible.

better late than never, I absolutely never knew that Edu Schwank's coach is Javier, David's brother!!!
    is that true?

  4. Well, its looking like theres gonna be a Sunday.I dont know how ready will David be for a possible 5th.

  5. Yeah, doesn't look good right now...

  6. Well, at least Pico will be fresh for tomorrow. I don't know about this strategy.

  7. The idea behind that strategy did sound good to me but sadly it doesn't work out for now... Would have been great if they could have won. I really hope that Juan can make it, so that it comes to no drama with a 5th rubber.

  8. damnnn Germany up 2 sets to 0.

yes, I hope Pico will be fresh for tomorrow!

  9. Mira, yes - Javier is Edu's coach. :-)

I think he always(?) has been. As long as I've heard of Edu, anyway.

  10. oh okay! thank you Istabraq :)
I didn't know until I randomly searched something about Edu. Now I can feel David is acting more like a "big brother" to Edu than just normal teammates, it's kinda cute lol :)

  11. Although I think Julia mentioned something about Javier having a new young coaching charge a while back, so I did wonder if he and Edu had parted ways. I assume not, though I never trust things like the ATP site to be up to date.

I remember Javier sitting just behind the team during the doubles in Seville, which I didn't think he'd be there for only for David.

About David/Javier rather than Edu/Javier... When David came to England last year, Javier was there with him acting as coach. He was there through Queen's and halfway through Boodles, then one day Luis Lobo showed up at Boodles and Javier wasn't around, and I didn't see him again. Lobo was with David at Wimbledon.

thank you Istabraq, I understand more about Javier's presence here and there over the last months...

  22. only one stream is working at the moment and that with freezing, the first was banned again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. yaay my stream works fine again, just when Argentina breaks!

  26. Finally! God the streaming gave me a headache!

  27. HUGE win!!!!!!

so proud of the pair! David the backbone of the team, definitely!

    ReplyDelete
  28. YAY! Third point! Vamos! Grande!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, they won. Frozen streams and all.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So glad they were able to win (and 3-0 too!) without Delpo - although to be fair, Germany having to play Petzsche instead of Kohli won't have helped them either.

  31. both David and Edu are interviewed by (Argentine?) tv.
    MArtin Jaite as well.

I'm happy for them!!!! and proud David brought 2 points for the team

    ReplyDelete
  32. at least it didn't freeze during David's interview even though as usual I have no idea what's he saying :p

    ReplyDelete
  33. Happy describes it so well!!!

It was so cute seeing the Argies celebrating and hopping around, Jaite and Zabaleta looked like players :-).
Great that they didn't give up and turned it around.

  34. Who do you think will play tomorrow?

Not David, but Chela surely. I thought Pico might still play, but he had a long and tiring week last week, so maybe Edu will play singles.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think both Edu and Chela will play tomorrow.
Zabaleta... damnnn I used to have a crush on this player back then... haha :)

  36. David is such a DC legend,if he doesnt win it during his carer there really isnt any justice in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  37. so true Adrian!
it always hurts me when I hear commies talking about Argentina being only runner-up and never won the title :(

so it'll be winner of Japan/Croatia in quarterfinal. Will they play in Argentina this time?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Its in Argentina no matter who comes through but I think its gonna be Croatia.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm afraid of Karlovic already... haha.
but as long as they play in Argentina, there'll be good vibes out there!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes, David is a DC legend. Now Jaite's strategy seems brilliant. I wasn't so sure for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  41. even if David/Edu had to lose the doubles, I guess Jaite was confident enough about Pico's ability to win the 4th rubber.
amazing thing is that Edu/David get along very well on the court.
even when they were down 2 sets to 0, David didn't look frustrated, not like if he was playing a match on the ATP tour

    ReplyDelete
  42. It was the good old "let David play every rubber the rules allow him to" haha.Hey,if there are no injuries, why not?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yes - DC aside, this year seems to have started much more promisingly for David than the last couple, health-wise. Remember in AO how it was Isner looking like collapsing, while David seemed fine, physically. (Sorry to stir up memories of how that one ended!)

    ReplyDelete
  44. congratulation i'm so glad, there is happy end :) after 3:30 hour :$

    ReplyDelete
  45. So realisticly what are the chances we see David in Sao Paulo?
