Davis Cup Semifinal - Day 1

(Andrej Isakovic/AFP/Getty Images)

UpdateII
David has won the first point for Argentina, defeating Viktor Troicki 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 47 minutes. I've said it before, there are two versions of David Nalbandian. And today, we got to see "Davis Cup David" again. It's been a while since he played that well - throughout the match.

A post-match interview with David here. Photos on the Photo Page. Links for the recording (courtesy of Krystle, thanks) are now available on David on Screen.

Edit: In the second rubber Delpo beat Janko Tipsarevic 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
After the first day, Argentina leads 2-0.

(Clarin)

It's day one of the Davis Cup semifinal Serbia vs Argentina at the Belgrade Arena - time for the first two singles rubbers. And for something we haven't seen in a while. For the first time since the lost final at Mar del Plata 2008, Argentina's line-up for the first day consists of the two gentlemen pictured above, David and Juan Martin Del Potro. (Here's a pic of them, training today.)
Update
It's official now and confirmed by the AAT: Novak Djokovic has pulled out of today's match.
Instead, David will face Viktor Troicki.

So here's what's ahead today (more about the match-ups in the previous post):

First rubber
Viktor Troicki vs David

Second rubber
Janko Tipsarevic vs Juan Martin Del Potro

Davis cup madness - here we come...

  1. This tweet says it as well :

"AND Djokovic withdraws from #daviscup rubber v @nalbandiandavid with lower back. Replaced by Viktor Troicki"

  2. I just had to wait for it to become official. Now it is and it's not a surprise.
He has to cite some sort of injury/problem by the way to be able to withdraw.

    ReplyDelete
  3. He had that problem in the US Open final, but like you said, he needed to cite that as a reason.

  4. play has started, stream available on LSH, among them.. this one http://www.sport24.me/streams/CreepyTV7.html

    ReplyDelete
  6. what will be the end with him
this lapses of concentration are killing his career

    ReplyDelete
  7. The DC scoreboard is not working for this match, but it is for the Spain-France one. Don't understand

    ReplyDelete
  8. David breaks back.
It's not over till it's over so no need to let him down, the match is going to last!!
    Come on David!

    ReplyDelete
  9. the best iv seen nalbandian play this year
    better than against nadal
    jaw dropping stuff

    ReplyDelete
  10. Agree with you Isis, spectacular stuff. The court reminds me of Paris 2007.

    ReplyDelete
  11. And David takes the first set 6-4. Good match from him so far.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I thought David was actually gonna play some kind of crazy backhand overhead at 30-30 haha.

    ReplyDelete
  13. some updates from time to time, my stream freezes a lot

    ReplyDelete
  14. 4-3 in the second, on serve. David had 2 BPs in Troicki's last game but couldn't convert.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Try this one Noubar, works fine for my poor connection :)

    grrrrrr Troicki just breaks...

    ReplyDelete
  16. i cant believe how stupid david is
    its unbelievable
finish the god damned point with a winner for god sake

    ReplyDelete
  17. Come on, isis!!! It's not like David has lost the match altogether. These things happen.

    ReplyDelete
  18. tiffany you see he lost the set
    so predictable

    ReplyDelete
  19. Why does David keep on trying that lob,I mean Troicki is like 193,super athletic and on top has pretty bad volleys, why not go for the passing shot.Hope he can bounce back.

    ReplyDelete
  20. he will win the 3rd am sure, go David you can do this

    ReplyDelete
  21. adrian im telling you david should have crush him in 3
now we all know what will happen
why the hell he tried that drop shot is beyhond me

    ReplyDelete
  22. i am so pissed i hate that troicki he is such a pusher without any skill what so ever

    ReplyDelete
  23. I actually think the drop shot wasnt that bad of a idea, but yeah,he is trying to be a little too flashy finishing points.I still feel hes playing good.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i am so pissed i hate that troicki he is such a pusher without any skill what so ever
    billy is right

    ReplyDelete
  25. For someone without any skills whasoever he's keeping David rather busy.

    ReplyDelete
  26. all in all i agree adrian he is playing very well probably the best iv seen from him this year
in parts it was almost 2007 nalbandian

    ReplyDelete
  27. when was the last time he came up with a winner?
he is just serve and push

    ReplyDelete
  28. you were right isis, now we all knew what was going to happen, david david leads 3-0

    ReplyDelete
  29. So stubborn haha,I knew he was gonna go for the lob again.Thank god it worked this time.

    ReplyDelete
  30. yeah guys nalbandian is at his very best
if he only played that way against nadal...

    ReplyDelete
  31. You play as well as your opponents allows you to - as David would say.

    ReplyDelete
  32. he should play at the same level on the tour he would be top 10 in no time

    ReplyDelete
  33. I mean,he is a pusher but the is a skill to being one,so many hours of training for stamina and working on his groundstrokes to make them so solid that he can become a defensive player.

    ReplyDelete
  34. yeah julia but dont you think he looks better today in terms of game?

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's easier to look good against Troicki than Nadal.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Were talking about Troicki like hes a bum,hes 16 in the world!

    ReplyDelete
  37. hope david breaks at 5-2, he has done well serving 1st till now

    ReplyDelete
  38. he didnt let me down, bravo david

    ReplyDelete
  39. david is playng amazinggg
    i am so happppyyyy

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi guys! Hope everybody is enjoying the match so far :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. yaaaay!!! not the easiest match but not impossible to close it out in 4 sets. Fingers crossed!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. So far, not a bad show. Just hope he can close this out quickly!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. nalbandian is flying at the moment
as jason goodall said in 2007

    ReplyDelete
  44. David's a man in a hurry....WATCH OUT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. He was so kind to give Viktor a game!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Mic thing? The score was confusing to me at first...thought VT broke back. Then realized that the game is STILL going on!! AD David for 4-1.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Quite naturally, it's deuce again. ARRRRRGHHHH!!! Come on!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I don't know Tiffany! I'm watching on a livestream and I had the sound low but I thought I heard somebody was speaking on the mic while they were playing :s it might be my imagination though :p

    ReplyDelete
  49. AD David...please HOLD!!! You're making me get gray hairs!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. he almost killed me in that long game, well done

    ReplyDelete
  51. @Camilia, oh...anyway, he does hold. Does someone know what happened? At first, the scoreboard had VT breaking David back, then the scoreboard rolled back. Was there an overrule?

    ReplyDelete
  52. VT got one of the breaks back. It's 5-2 VT serving.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Argentina leads 1-0, what a talented player djokovic must be saying right now

    ReplyDelete
  54. Vamos David,Vamos Argentina.Hopefully Delpo can make it 2-0

    ReplyDelete
  55. nalbandian is back to his very best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ole ole ole ole!!!! wish I were into the Argentine part of the crowd! :)

Happy with David's match, he did his job pretty properly. Hope Del Potro will join him and win a second point as well!!

The King of Davis Cup, no doubt it's David :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Lets not forget,he also won I think 70 or 75 points.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was watching the match but didn't get a real impression how good David was, but at least he was constant and in a good form today, but that second set he gifted to Troicki, again he couldn't serve to stay in the set and in last set he couldn't close the match out, then he did better with the second chance.
Also because he didn't played against a very top player it's difficult to say how good he was.

    ReplyDelete
  59. but I am happy that he was playing good in his last matches since US Open. He was also last year against Monfils good but we know how good Monfils defended last year, I must always laugh when I watch Monfils with his funny play and actions :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. So Ashot, who goes as a top player for you?

    ReplyDelete
  61. DC radio just aired troicki's interview after the match. and it was too negative, he said he did so many UEs and david was too aggressive and played the way he should and certainly deserved the win. as for novak he said he has physical problems and he knew he wasnt going to play.
commentator said it was obviously a bluff putting novak's name in the draw.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think it really was no surprise that Nole didn't play. And it was also no surprise that they put his name in the draw anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Del Potro just couldn't win the first set at 5:4 and 40:0 on Tipsis serve, where he had another break chance after deuce. Now 5:5

    ReplyDelete
  64. of course Adrian, all top 10 players :D
Del Potro just had another chance at 6:5 40:0 to break and win the set and he used the first chance.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Delpo 7-5,showing some emotion,nice to see.

    ReplyDelete
  66. again Del Potro couldn't break at 5:2 and 40:0, but he close the set out to love after winning his service game before to love too. Del Potro is not David, he has a good serve and doesn't need to be so nervous as David :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Vamos Delpo,2-0 Argentina.Loved the high five at the end.

    ReplyDelete
  68. YAYYYYY Argentina ole ole !!!
So happy for David and DelPo, they did the necessary with such a dedication. Davis Cup is definitely special for David (we knew that) and DelPo (as well), and seeing them both enjoying together... aww :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm reading that Tipsarevic had his ankle packed up in ice at the press conference (also troubled him during the match). And he's the one who's supposed to play on all 3 days.

    ReplyDelete
  70. And you're right, Adrian. David's win is also worth 70 ranking points.

I'm really, really happy that David (and Delpo) did so well today. But I guess I'd just be that tiny little bit more happy if it wasn't for Spain, looming in the possible final...

    ReplyDelete
  71. I was too,but it seems only fitting that if they are gonna do it,they are gonna avenge 2008.

    ReplyDelete
  72. But in Spain, on clay? I can't help but fear for David's health, thinking about that scenario

By the way, Rafa says he hopes the Argentine team makes it. He knows why...

    ReplyDelete
  73. I guess if its only 2 matches hopefully nothing could go wrong. Can they even play outdoor clay in December? It seems to me like literally Spain wins it every year,if David and Delpo want it more, anything can happen.About the Serbiatie, who could Obradovic send out for the 5th rubber,if it comes down to one if Tipsarevic cant go,Bozoljac?

    ReplyDelete
  74. They'll play indoors on clay as they've done before.
Maybe Tipsarevic won't play doubles tomorrow so that he can be there for the fifth rubber. That's another strength of the Serbian team, they have Zimonjic and he can play doubles with anyone, he could also play with Djokovic or Troicki tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think Dokovic and Zimonjic arent that good of a pair, they will probably play Troicki with Nenad.I think theres a good chance Chela and Pico take it.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I hope they will. They've actually played doubles together several times this year.
I have to say though that I like Zimonjic. Saw him play live, up close on the small court at Vienna. Pretty cool.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hes been around so long,Troicki also saying he doesnt feel good on the surface, another great fact.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yeah, the surface they chose hasn't worked too well for them, so far.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yeah I also thought that the court surface was perfect for David as well.
