Queen's Club R1 - David vs Illya Marchenko

(Julian Finney/Getty Images)

Update IIIDavid and Andy Roddick have lost their doubles match against Delpo and Radek Stepanek, who prevailed 6-3, 6-4 in what was apparently a highly entertaining match.

Update II

David has won his ATP comeback match, defeating Illya Marchenko 6-3, 6-4 in just under one and a half hours.
In the second round, he now won't get his "test match", instead he'll face Ilija Bozoljac from Serbia (who defeated Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin). It'll be another first meeting for David.

More soon...

Update
David's comeback match is underway now.

So this is it. After 107 days of first surgery, then recovery, infection and fever, then more recovery and training for David, and 107 days of waiting for him to play another ATP match for us - David (now #24) will play his comeback match today at the Queen's Club. Against 23-year-old Ukrainian Illya Marchenko. It'll be the first time they meet.

As mentioned before in the draw post, Marchenko is ranked just outside of the Top100 (#108 as of this week) and so far this year, he has really struggled to make it past the first round at ATP events, if he got into the main draw at all. And because this is their first encounter, chances are that David's knowledge of Marchenko and his game is rather limited.
- Just like mine. I've seen him play only once, two years ago in Davis Cup. And though I recall that I was quite impressed with his gutsy performance in front of a rather vociferous (away tie) crowd, that's pretty much as far as my memory goes.

Another thing that's rather limited is Marchenko's experience, playing on grass. If you count in his first-round loss at Wimbledon qualies back in 2009, he has played a grand total of six matches on grass, the remaining five of which all took place last year.
In other words, it's very tempting to see Marchenko as the kind of player who shouldn't be able to trouble to David, not on this surface and not even after a long injury pause. Still, and despite having been able to prepare on grass, David will be rusty after another long pause.
How rusty exactly - that's what he and we are going to find out.

Later, in the evening, David is also scheduled to play his doubles match - again, after it was cancelled yesterday. Unfortunately, there won't be any stream, neither for his comeback match, nor for there doubles. Only the scoreboard.
But VD readers Istabraq and joyce63 will be courtside at the Queen's Club, and will be able to tell us a bit more about what happened (and there will be more photos).

  1. awww thank you Istabraq for the photos :) enjoy as much as you can!

i think David will need few games to figure Marchenko's game out. Let's hope David will make his mark early in the match and build up confidence upon it.

thank you Julia for all the updates, as always :)
too bad there won't be any stream, will bite my nails looking at the scoreboard then...

  4. "Court two packed to gills for Nalbandian-Marchenko. Nalbs looking fantastically fit and hitting the ball well early doors."
    Tweeted by Gauloises/Newballsplease, who's coutrtside.

  7. thanks Julia. Following Newballsplease's tweets

"Watching Nalbandian never gets old. Nor does trying to figure what goes on in his head. Just had three bps slip through his fingers."

followed by "I'm either crazy or I am sitting behind Tito Vazquez of Argy Davis Cup fame. Or It's just someone else."

are you on Twitter Julia? (i've asked you this some time ago but maybe you've got an account now ;))

  8. No, I'm still not on Twitter. ;)

But I can only recommend her tweets, and her blog of course.

  9. A nice 6-3, 6-4 win. Looks like Andy is having a real battle with Lopez.

  10. Yay! that's a nice win for David. Pretty comfortable one.
Match stats are available on ATP's score & stats page.

  11. Interesting, the way the match developed. He was off to a very good start, not really usual for him, and then things a got a little more complicated in the second set... Still - a great way to come back. And without dropping serve. :)

  12. I think Bozoljac is up next.Hes a big Serbian with a big serve.A few years ago he gave Federer a good match at Wimbledon,he can be dangerous on grass.

  13. Istabraq and I have had a great day, firstly watching David practice and then the match itself. Istabraq took notes so will report back in full, but overall it was a solid performance from David, though he got a little lucky in the last couple of games. I'm hoping we'll see him again tomorrow, and that they put him on centre court!

  14. Forgot to say Istabraq is going to try to get into the doubles match but I'm staying in Centre as I'd like to see Rafa's doubles match. I need to leave quite early tomorrow so it might be my only chance to see him play.

  21. now lets focus on the singles, shall we? lol
looks like they had some fun

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ah to bad,I hope they had fun,at least he can now focus fully on the singles,if he beats Bozoljac he would face Verdasco.

  23. Well, Julia, life won't be so crazy now that you don't have to worry about doubles. At least David got some practice. Anxiously awaiting Istabraq's pics.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Unfortunately, life is crazy enough at the moment, also without doubles. Anyway, might take a while until I can post the match report and Istabraq's photos. After all, she has to get home first. :)

  25. Istabraq is doing a great job, special thanks to you :)

  26. it was funny to read newballsplease's tweets on the dubs. I wish we all could watch it...

kind of relieved that David can now focus on his singles draw :)

  29. Thanks.

I thought this was going to happen...

  30. Bozoljac and David deserve center court more than Cilic and Clemont in my opinion.Nothing else but for David to take out Bozoljac for his loving fans to give us a chance to see him on center court vs Verdasco.

    ReplyDelete
  31. And again.... David relegated on court 1 and looked scornfully (okay, i'm exaggerating a bit ;))

totally agree with you Adrian. I hope he'll have a good result vs. Bozoljac

    ReplyDelete
  32. if not cilic. Nadal's doubles match couldve been played on court 1. anyways lets hope david gets this Serb. So we all get the chanceto watch him on grass, after nearly 3 years

  33. I just watched highlights of his match vs Federer at last years Wimbledon,he seems like very nice guy,he has a good sense of humor and almost pushed Fed to 5 sets. The strange thing is he sometimes plays his forehand with one hand and sometimes with two.Its fascinating to watch. He has a monster serve, great volleys and very good backhand.I cant believe hes not in the top 50.If hes on form this week David will have a lot of problems.I think Bozoljac is a name to watch out for at Wimbledon.

  35. Thanks for the nice comments about my photos, folks.

It was great to meet up with fellow VamosDavider Joyce63 and watch the match with her.

I agree, it seems wrong not to put David on Centre Court yet again. I won't be able to see tomorrow's as I don't have a Court 1 ticket.

But do you know how I got to see the doubles without a Court 1 ticket today? I stood at the top of the Centre Court stand (while Nadal & Lopez were playing their doubles too) which overlooks Court 1, so I saw the whole thing. :)
