David: I need (at least) a few more Weeks

A new interview with David and again in form of a video. This time by MundoD, who caught up with David at a golf tournament he was visiting in Villa Allende (where he trains at the Inés Gorrochategui Tennis Academy, close to Unquillo).

In this clip, David first talks about the golf event and how happy he is to be able to attend it for the first time and how golf is a very nice sport. Then the reporter asks him how he's doing now - and that's where the interesting part starts. David says he's fine, he's training and it's going pretty well. Then he adds that he still can't train at 100% and that when he can train at 100% then he'll be able to come back.
But how long is that going to take? Well, he gives two answers to that question. First he says "a month, or thereabouts" (note: Roland Garros starts in about a month). Then he says that he "still needs a few more weeks" before he's going to "start travelling again". In other words - right now, David obviously doesn't really know when he'll come back. And nothing seems at least relatively certain, neither Rome, nor Nice...
After that, David talks about the Davis Cup, about how it's a "great objective" and that he'll try to be in the best possible shape for the next tie. And about Djokovic's "impressive season", Rafa always being Rafa and Federer struggling a bit with the change of generations, saying that these three and Murray are likely to remain at the very top.
But when will David join them again on the Tour? We'll have to wait and see...

  1. Oh dear, this isn't very good news. And I'm getting déjà vu...

  2. Well, maybe it's all part of a cunning plan and he's going to surprise us all by showing up at Madrid... Or maybe not.

  3. I do hope it is a cunning plan.
    :)

  4. nalbandian has never had a cunning plan in his life

  5. I suppose my attempt at irony was lost on you. Anyway, I beg to differ.

  6. Anonymus has right, if it is about David's comeback, we have only had bad surprises, lol. But it becomes now gradually disappointing.

  7. What Anonymous was saying is that David is dumb. I don't think he is.

  8. I think I didn't understood what "cunning" is. Anonymous is probably therefore saying so because he is frustrated but I think he knows himself that it isn't so.

  9. Cunning means "gerissen" or "gewieft". ;)
In my experience (from forums etc) a lot of people think that David is dumb. But I guess that's an impression you might get if you only follow the English-speaking press.

  10. If it isn't about DC David is one of the most intelligent players ever and that I think knows every tennis moderator and every player who knows him. And all moderators love him very much. Even the UK moderators are more for him than for Murray when David plays against him and they find it pity too when David plays good but then struggles. And I never heard from a tennis fan who said he doesn't love David. They all know him as one of the most talented players who doesn't make use of it enough. They are only sometimes kidding ab out his weight.

  11. Well, I don't think it's all just 100% positive. The Eurosport and TTV commentators for example like David. But it's not the same everywhere. Also not in Argentina. Or with tennis fans in general. Some like him, some don't.
And as much as I do, I sometimes poke a bit of fun at his inability to remember previous opponents and matches... He's not perfect but he's also not dumb.

  12. What Anonymous said doesn't mean that David is dumb, he just meant that David won't come up with a clever, well devised comeback plan. I could easily see David skipping Roland Garros before I see him have a cunning plan of showing up to Madrid and dominating the field. You can still be smart without being witty and cunning, although David's on court skills are very clever.

  13. Okay, maybed I need to clarify - my first comment here was meant to add a bit of humour.
And if someone posts that David has never had a cunning plan in his life then I think it doesn't just refer to the latest comeback scenario.

When I say David isn't perfect then I mean he's a human being and those are never perfect. ;)

  14. i'm sorry my comment was made as a continuation of your irony julia. i certainly don't think he is dumb, and i think his personality on and off court is admirable. but it is true that as cunning as a plan may be, he's left to battle with the elements, and due to a run of bad luck, his calculations about his involvement in the tour have been less reliable.

didn't mean to offend and thanks for your work here, i enjoy following updates even in the down time

  15. Okay, so it was your irony that was lost on me... lol
    Well, now it's clear. :)
Yeah, I was trying to make light of the whole waiting situation, as in - wouldn't it be great if he's fooling us all and makes a surprise comeback at Madrid... When the reality is of course different and much more complicated.
It's just that I get to read a lof of things about David and not all of it is nice...
Anyway, thanks for clearing it up and you're welcome.

  16. It would be smarter for him to get some practice hours rather than playing golf, but of course he can do whatever he thinks is best.Till I read this post i was secretly hoping he would show up for Madrid or at least I felt Rome was 100%,now I would be surprised even if he shows up at RG.But then again,I hope he surprises us all and comes to Madrid or Rome.

  17. I feel just like you Adrian.
@Anonymous, why don't you use a name instead of Anonymous, so we can recognize you when you comment later, at least Anonymous1 or so lol.

  18. Bahh I can't wait to see the slim Nalbandian in action on the court. Looks like he's got some nice ladies accompanying him there..

    ReplyDelete
  19. same old story from nalbandian, never really commited to tennis and would rather play golf and drive cars.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Same old cliché... If all he wants is to play golf or drive rally cars - then why didn't he quit tennis a long time ago? Why bother to come back after surgery? Why suffer in DC?

  21. Any news anybody?I see hes still on the entrance list for Madrid.

  22. only seems to play 3 months a season now

  23. David threw a barbecue party on Saturday. - That's all the "news" there is at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Who did he throw it for, himself? Hee hee...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Next time he should throw one for us ever-patient VamosDaviders...
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. They're from the Argentine TV show "Y Donde Esta El Mafioso".

    ReplyDelete
  27. yes, VamosDavid team deserves a barbecue more than anyone he knows.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Even if Tamar can set up a barbeque with David, would it be a good idea? You'd just fawn over him and make him uncomfortable.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous, thanks for the "wet blanket" comment. We were having a little joke. Have you migrated over from BBC's 606 forum? Your style sounds depressingly familiar. And get a name, if you're staying. Otherwise we don't even know if it's the same person posting each time.

  30. Now I think of it, Anonymous, you seem to be implying that you're not one of us.

And I had you down as chief fawner...
    ;)

  31. I think that David could a lot of fun with us at a barbecue :-)

I can't wait to see David again, I cross all my fingers that he can be fit as fast as possible.

  32. Anonymous, I still can't forget that David didn't won in Auckland...

    ReplyDelete
  33. David uncomfortable at being fawned over? I don't think so... lol

For my part, I'd prefer to ask him a variety of questions. And I think I'm not the only one.

  34. Looks like David is working his belly back in shape there hehehe
