Copa Claro Draw

The first news from the tournament site's Twitter were correct.
David has been drawn into the top, i.e. Almagro's half, which looks like this:

[1] Nicolas Almagro (ESP) vs Pablo Galdon (ARG)
Leonardo Mayer (ARG) vs [WC] Federico Delbonis (ARG)
Lukasz Kubot (POL) vs Pablo Cuevas (URU)
[WC] José Acasuso (ARG) vs [7] Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR)

[3] David Nalbandian (ARG) vs Potito Starace (ITA)
Juan Pablo Brzezicki (ARG) vs Filippo Volandri (ITA)
Albert Ramos - Vinolas vs Joao Souza (BRA)
[WC] Maximo Gonzalez (ARG) vs [6] Tommy Robredo (ESP)

The complete draw you can view here.

The tournament website calls it a "classic". I feel tempted to call it "deja vu all over again" - David against Potito Starace at Buenos Aires. For the third time now in four years. And for the second time in a row, they're going to meet in the first round. A strange coincidence but there are worse things than facing an opponent in the first round you've never lost to before.
In the second round, David could meet another Italian but one he has a negative record against. Filippo Volandri won two of their three matches so far (all on clay) but almost five years have gone by since they last played against each other.
The first seeded player bound to cross David's path is Tommy Robredo, who could be David's opponent in a possible quarterfinal. And out of the seeded players, I think that it could've been a lot worse. David has 6-2 match record against Robredo and the last three times (two of which were on clay), David beat him very easily.
In a hypothetical semi, David might face top seed Nicolas Almagro or rising star Alexandr Dolgopolov (finalists at Costa do Sauipe today)... Still far away. Too far away to speculate.

A brief glimpse at David, training at the stadium here.

As for David's charity football match today, it ended in a 4-4 draw, without injuries but with a lot of fun that David had at Gualeguaychú, a "very nice city" where he "always has a good time" (source).

  1. in my opinion, just what i hoped for, Not wawrinka's half, and starace is not that tough for a 1st round, at least he knows his game

  2. Yeah, wouldn't be too bad - if the info is correct. I'll first have to wait for the complete draw to be officially released.
Can't believe he has, apparently, drawn Starace for the first round - again...

  3. That's hard to believe David would draw Starace in the 1st round two years in a row. A semifinal match against Dolgopolov would be interesting, wouldn't it? I have a feeling Dolgo is going to beat Almagro today at Costa do Saupe.

  4. I think Almagro and Dolgo would both be tough for David, if he gets that far. In any case, the CdS final is even more interesting now. :)
And yeah - Starace. Can you believe it? I thought maybe they were joking when I first saw it on Twitter...

  5. I would agree with that "if he gets that far." Even though David has a good record against Robredo, I never see Tommy as an easy match.

  6. Well, I was hoping for Robredo to be the first seed David can meet... :)

  7. It's a pretty decent draw again for David, one in which he obviously can win, but we'll see how he's playing, you can never really expect anything except the unexpected with David. he could go out in the first round or win the thing I've stopped worrying about it because there's nothing we can do about it, i'll just enjoy watching him play again.

  8. Lets hope that there will be streams right from the start of the tournament.

  9. It's always a bit risky to make promises when it comes to streams but it's looking good for next week. Bet365 have the Copa Claro listed from Monday on, so there should also be free streams on the usual sites.

John H - yeah, that pretty much sums up my approach, as well.

  10. Interesting draw. David draws Starace, who only just narrowly missed out on seeding. Looking forward to a second round against Volandri. :) But I'm not sure if Volandri will beat the qualifier.

  11. Having had a look at the qualifying draw, I think there's a fair chance that Volandri will make it to the second round. :)
What I really don't like is the new look of the stadium (as can be seen in the YT clip), all in red.

  12. Looking forward to it. :)

Yes, it is a bit in-your-face red, isn't it?

  13. hehe yea, the red color cut my attention as well. And about the possible SF vs Almagro/Dolgopolov its interesting to say that they met today in the final and Almagro had a somewhat easy win, and I also hope tommy would be the 1st seed he plays, i feel like David enjoys the robredo encounters. Plus the home crowd.

  14. David has played against Robredo many times lately. I think even though Robredo won some matches earlier on, David feels like he owns him. I get that feeling whenever I watch their matches.

I don't think I feel confident that Volandri will win any match, but yeah the qualies draw does look weak.

  15. exactly Krystle, i get that feeling too, the last 6 sets david won against Tommy were 6-1 6-0 6-3 6-4 6-3 6-0, but the clay H2H remains 3-2 in the favor of David.but 1st things 1st, hope this time David gets to play on Monday.i dont know how do they choose the OOP, but hope the top half plays 1st

  16. yes, for David it's better to play on Monday and have the rest after first round. He has played only 2 matches after AO now.

  17. David plays on Tuesday evening according to tournament's twitter site. Damage

  18. It says they're considering the different options.
Tuesday night would be David's usual slot though they initially promised that one to Wawrinka. We'll see.

  19. Looks like David also went to the Carnaval at Gualeguaychú again and did some singing after all... (Though no pics or clips, so far.)

  20. David should sing when he wins Copa Claro :D
David's match is sheduled for tomorrow, probably evening, because it is listed next to last before Acasuso's match.
