David and Horacio Zeballos won today's doubles, defeating Robin Söderling and Robert Lindstedt 6-2, 7-6(4), 7-6(5).
After the second day of the tie, Argentina are now up 2-1.
- Those are the facts after a match that proved of how little importance statistics and sheer logic can be when David is playing Davis Cup. On paper, it looked like a very makeable rubber for the Swedes, with their experienced doubles team and playing in front of their home crowd. Against Davis Cup debutant Horacio Zeballos and David, coming straight from another injury and having played exactly two matches in the last ten moths. Apart from that, the two of them only had one and a half days to prepare for their first ever doubles match together...
I guess you cannot even blame the Swedish team for being as surprised as they obviously were when after the first four games they found themselves down a double break and 4-0. From the very first point on, David and Horacio seemed determined to give everything they could - but also to enjoy themselves on court. It was clear from the start that David was the boss. But the atmosphere between the two was very relaxed and that helped Horacio to play his best tennis, or as he later said, "I felt very safe with David at my side". Early on in the match, David hit a couple of amazing return winners and also displayed some deft touch at the net. And although his serve didn't really look too good at first (it improved as the match went on though his first serve percentage was once more a catastrophe) he was able to hold serve, also in the important moments, for example when he served for the first set at 5-2 and after saving a break point served an ace to set up a first set point. In that moment, one of their biggest strengths today became apparent - they took the first chance they had and won the first set 6-2.

In the first set, David and Horacio had been the dominant team, playing more aggressively than the Swedes and also showing no real signs of any coordination problems. Especially on David's serve, Horacio covered the net extremely well, winning many quick points for their team with his amazingly fast volleys. At the start of the second set, however, a couple of unfortunate points during Horacio's first service game (and maybe also the Swedish crowd recovering from their shock again) led to an early break against Argentina and gave Sweden a 2-0 lead. At 3-0 and on David's serve the Swedish team had another break point to go up a double break but once again, David saved it with a service winner and eventually held for 3-1. At 4-2, David and Horacio managed to get the re-break, when Lindstedt dropped his serve after having already been up 40-15. Once more taking the first chance that presented itself to them. At 5-4 and on game point, David played a series of artistic volleys at the net that had Horacio bow to him and of which I really hope there's going to be a YouTube clip... In the end, the set went to a tiebreak. There, they had two set points at 6-4, the first of which coming on Horacio's serve. And once again, he immediately took his chance and converted it with an ace. 7-6(4).

Though David and Horacio were now leading two sets to love, many of the games had been fairly long and hard-fought until this point. But this was to change now in the third set. Until 6-5 Argentina, there were neither any deuces, nor further break points. Instead, all four players easily held their serves until Lindstedt had to serve for Sweden to stay in the match. That particular game saw a lengthy deuce battle but in the end no break, i.e. match points. Instead, the third set also went to a tiebreak. Which began with a clean return winner from Lindstedt off a second serve from David and therefore a mini-break for Sweden. But already two points later, Horacio hit a return winner off a second serve from Söderling to bring them back on serve. At 3-2, a great return from David drew the error from Lindstedt and now saw them up a mini-break. Eventually, at 6-4, David and Horacio had two match points, though this time the first one came on Söderling's serve and he managed to save it with an ace. But then, at 6-5, it was Horacio's turn to serve... And he converted their second match point with a great short volley cross. 7-6(5).
Here's a clip of the last two points...
(More photos from the match on the photo page.)
In his interview directly after the match, David was of course happy about the victory and also full of praise for his new doubles partner...
A key rubber for this tie. We played a very good match. We had our doubts because we've never played together before and I just arrived here. But Horacio was fantastic. As if he had already played 20 Davis Cup ties and that was his debut today... He played an impressive match. Taking the match point by point helped us a lot.But at the same time, he had to admit that he's not in perfect shape and that by all rights he shouldn't be playing...
I feel fine but the adductor is there, only half okay. The reality is that I shouldn't be playing. I came here only to play the doubles and fortunately, we won. But well, we'll see tomorrow...Tito Vázquez is still hoping for Leonardo Mayer to pull off the big upset and beat Söderling tomorrow. But he's obviously speculating that if it all comes down to a decisive fifth rubber then David will play...
David has a good chance of playing tomorrow. Mayer will play against Söderling and if after that the score is 2-2 then hopefully we'll have a surprise for them. Then we'll see who's going to play [the fifth rubber]. (Sources: canchallena.com & Olé)Though I'm not really sure whether it would be such a huge surprise for the Swedes, as the following quote from Robert Lindstedt (from his interview for the Davis Cup website) shows...
Hopefully we made David run a little bit so he's not going to feel too fit tomorrow.
In his audio interview for the Davis Cup website (which you can find at the bottom of this article), David once again admits that he's not 100% fit and that he hopes he won't have to play tomorrow. But that he will if he has to...
The Davis Cup madness continues.
- But whatever may happen on the third day of this tie, one thing is certain. I won't be here to see it. Instead, Krystle's debut on Vamos David will come a little sooner than expected and she'll keep you posted tomorrow. So, be nice to her. ;)

JULIA, seriously i can't wait for the photos, the one in the post is great, but am sure there are more, keep it up.
I'll see what I can find. :) It'll probably take a while. And it's always a bit weird with DC, either there's tons of pics or hardly any at all.
i know i found 2 on GettyImages, but on the DC website u can find nothing, they only put like 5 pictures a day.
The DC site is always slow when it comes to adding new pics. Though sometimes they have really good ones. But they've changed the way their audio clips are embedded and now I can't link to them anymore...
julia, i found some good photos,
http://www.tennis.com/galleries/image.aspx?image=8758
Thanks. :) They have the Getty ones without a watermark. Very good.
Julia, this site has more Getty images without the watermark too:
http://www.daylife.com/search?q=David+Nalbandian
I also have a paid Getty Image account and can get any photo on there for free if needed. I will upload to tinypic and send you the URL if desired.
You two have found all the Getty images without watermarks so far. lol
Nice work! :)
Daylife is one of my main sources for pics. :)
Though I don't really know why they insist of putting up three version of the same photo today...
Thanks for the offer concerning Getty pics. Today, all they have is also on Daylife etc. But if you have an account that could be very helpful in the future.
I just came on to say what a great photo that is on the front page... and I find everyone is discussing photos.
I'm certainly looking forwaad to seeing more. :-)
@Julia. Those deleted comments from me were links to photos you and Noubar already found. Yes, A Day Life can sometimes get all the Getty photos, and other times it will only pick up 25%. It is very random, and I think when they do 3 duplicate photos, it is because Reuters has bought a Getty photo and some other news service has bought another. I can take a watermark off any pic and if I see one on Getty not on A Day Life that is memorable, I'll send you the URLs via e-mail or MTF account. Thanks again for the great coverage here! :)
@Istabraq
Check out the additional photos under "Update" now too. There are some classic photos that can only be captured during a huge doubles match like this one. David looks great and very excited! :) It looks like the trip to Sweden was worth it after all.

julia i didnt know that the longest doubles match of al time was played by nalbandian/Arnold vs safin/some1, in davis cup 2002 semifinal.
the match lasted 6 hours and 25 minutes, 6-4/6-4/5-7/3-6/19-17
Yeah, I think it's also the longest doubles match of all time. Vs Safin and Kafelnikov. :)
I don't know if you knew about Vazquez's statements: "David will decide if he plays or not. If he want to take a chance, he'll play".
Way to put pressure on a player that went to help you with the though point, Tito!
While David, before Vazquez, said "Honestly, I'm not ready to play".
So now, Vazquez officially puts the final decision, and all the pressure, on David "I'm irrational when it comes to Davis" Nalbandian. Niiiiiice
And the worst? It's not like he says "I asked him to play" so the whole responsability of putting a player with no matches this year, with injuries because the lack of competion, not ok still, etc is his. No. With these words, IMO, Vazquez is doing the Pontion Pilatos move: "it was his choice, he said he was ok and I believed him, my only responsability was trust him" Arggh!
Sorry but those comments reminded me what Mancini did on 2008 against Sweden (that match against Soderling)
Being said that. I liked David-Zeballos A LOT.
Letting aside the point for Argentina (how we needed David! Mayer or Schawnk or even monaco wouldn't have been the same), I liked how the played together. Perhaps not the best of times to do it, but I'd love see them play ATP tournaments.
Well, let's hope that ANYTHING that happens tomorrow ends well for David and Argentina, but for David specially. And this not as a Nalbandian's fan: what he did going to play when the others were injures, and him being not ok still, nobody does it.
Yeah, I just posted some quotes. Both from Vázquez and David.
If you listen to David's audio interview on the DC website, you really get the impression that he doesn't want to play. - But that he also won't be able to say no if there's a decisive fifth rubber...
You got the same impression? Because I thougth the same and I found it weird David being so reserved about playing after a victory of this characteristic.
It's because of this that I don't like the way Vazquez talked. It's obviously that he has doubt about playing or not, don't put all the pressure on him! Come on the guy went there and gave you an enourmous hand (without him the doubles was lost). And if you need him to play, be a man and say it. Ask him! Don't say "it's on you David, I'm not putting any pressure, nonononono. It's youuuuurr choice!
Let's keep the fingers crossed ( we can add to that say some prays and light some candles because I don't see David not playing)
Well I'm not pleased to wake up this morning to read that David hasn't really recovered from his injury, almost as if he had never really recovered as much as he claimed to in the first place.
What a tough decision it will be for David to make on the fifth rubber. Aside from Vazquez putting the choice entirely on David on whether he'll play, he also seems to have expressed that he really wants him to play, according to the quotes on the DC site.
I thought David was pretty reserved in general after the match. Very careful with what he said. Nothing of the usual DC bravado. Which makes me think it has to be relatively bad. And which also makes me think that David knew why he didn't consult Ruiz-Cotorro before flying to Stockholm and that despite saying he's fully fit - he simply wasn't and isn't.
As for Vázquez, I was hoping that he'd do things differently from Mancini. I really was. But apparently, it's more of the same. Theoretically, he's leaving it to David to decide. Practically, he talks as if it's already clear that David will play if Mayer loses...
All I know is that I wouldn't want to be in David's shoes right now.
I think he's recovered at 80 or 90%. I think the tear is gone BUT probably the muscle is not totally ok, yet. He ended without pain today, but probably he felt weird on that zone. Don't forget he went without trainning.
I do believe he has no injury anymore, but still needs a couple of that to feel ok. The muscle could be healed but still needs time.
And about the Vazquez' attitude? different tiger but the same stripes.
The second single is accesible, at least what we saw on friday. David was clear about playing the doubles, but then again, as usual with him when the Davis is involve, after the interviews he said: we'll see tomorrow.
What could help David's decision? he knows if he has problems and can't play at all, even if he stays on court, and we lose, we will go to the playoff. And with an accesible match for the others, maybe that could made up his mind to not play.
We'll know tomorrow
Hey, i don't know who is there, in the other site of my PC, if someone will read this (as julia isn't there..)... but the argentinian journalist of the TV (the journalists of the match, who are transmiting and commenting Mayer's match), have just confirmed that David will play the 5th point... now he is in an auxiliar court, training with Eduardo Schwank... we will see what happens... I really hope Mayer can win the match (it's difficult, he is 0-2 in sets) or I hope David can play without getting injured (his leg -the "aductor"- or any other part...)...
Julia, good luck in your exam!! ;) hope you can pass it!!!
Thanks for the update, Tamar.
So David will definitely play. No surprises really. I don't have a stream for Leo's match, but I'm watching the scores. Looks as though he's putting up a good fight, but I guess it won't be enough.
Time to start praying that David will win AND not make his injury worse. I can't quite believe that after the shaky start he's had to his comeback, he is already in the postion of being expected to be the DC saviour.
Thanks Tamar for the update. I'll put it up in a post once this Mayer match is over.
Here is a link:

Soderling is serving for the match...
Remember David has never played a 5th point...
The journalists have just said that David is with some pain in the "aductor" - which is the word in english for that muscle, the one of his last injury, in the leg?
That's not good - and the Swedes will know this and try to work on it. Let's hope Vinciguerra isn't good enough to make things difficult for David, and that David can get through the match quickly.
I know very little about Vinciguerra - anyone know why he's the one playing? And is this good or bad - for us, that is?
I am guessing that he is playing because he can make the rallies longer than Johansson can, and that's important given David's injury.
http://www.daviscup.com/es/teams/player.asp?player=10020796
In the Copa Davis, vinciguerra has lost the last 7 singles matches he played (with one WO)!!
Vinciguerra was in the top-40 in 2001, but now is 232°, he is 29 years old.
