David has reached the quarterfinal of Copa Telmex by defeating Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(7) . - In a true rollercoaster of a match...
Report, pics etc. tomorrow.
David suffered an adductor strain during the match (and had to get his right thigh strapped up because of it). It's not clear yet whether he will be able to contest his quarterfinal match.
Tonight, David plays his second-round match against Daniel Gimeno-Traver, currently ranked #80, who beat Nicolas Almagro in the first round.It'll be the second encounter between David and Gimeno-Traver. The first one, which took place a year ago, also in the second round of the Copa Telmex, David won 7-5, 6-2.
Here's hoping that David will be able to add another good match to his list, whatever the outcome may be. And that once more, he'll be able to play without any discomfort.(Photo: EFE)

well i was shocked by davids performance, it was just amazing. Alright you could see some mistakes , but that will go away when he has more matchrythem. Personally i think he should skip the daviscup, because he just isin't in a physical level yet to compete with soderling for 5 sets. Which eventually increases the chance to get injured again. He should just take things slowly. He should concentrate on the French open.
But if he keeps improving and getting his fitniss better and better like the last few months, I feel sorry for the other top players.
am with u, he should skip davis cup, he will injure him self, and this time this could harm his career, he should be very careful about his choices.15 min left, here we go
Ciao, Agustin Calleri.
Can someone explain what the ceremony is about? I just saw Chucho speaking.
Saying goodbye to Calleri...
Aw, Thanks Julia.
He chose to serve first. That's new...
Hey, everyone! Good to see David again.
Nice start with the serve again. 1-0
David's become very competent at putting away short balls.
Vamos! David got the break back! He is playing more from the baseline although he came in that last point. 15-0
much better, nice little comeback
What was that? Did he think it was time for a changeover at 5-3? When he went back to his chair?
And then gives break back serving for the set. :(
Very up and down so far today. You can almost see him starting to focus in, and then losing focus a little. Obviously, the match play becomes an important factor with that.
C'mon David. Another aggressive return game needed! 0-15! good!
@Julia
A little rustiness perhaps? lol
Ooooh!!! Nice drop shot from David!
David has to be a little rusty, but I think he's playing really well overall. It will take time to get match tough.
I think Gimeno-Traver is doing a good job at preventing David from playing more aggressively. He is hitting some good shots DTL and hitting his shots deep enough to keep David on his heels a little.
Yuch! Bad shot from David at the net to go to the tiebreak.
Shite!!! :(
Big stamina test for David now.
david's level is far from good, missing easy shots and , donno wut 2 say
Looks like he's remembering now what he wanted to do - keep the points short, play aggressively.
couple of bad returns from david is making the job much harder, the spaniard is not so special in my opinion
I agree with Julia. Short points is the way to go and not having to engage in long rallies. He doesn't want to get into a dogfight.
am afraid he is starting to get tired, cmmon dave keep it together, u can do it
David is getting his right thigh strapped up by the trainer...
we cant even compare his returns with the ones he did with staraci, he is tired, but still fights
My stream went to Football, right after David started to get his thigh strapped up and it was in Spanish. I was afraid he retired for a second there. Thankfully, I found a different stream.
C'mon David!
Same thing happened to me, Tim. I was a bit worried there seeing David with the trainer
Crowd is getting into it!!!
Vamos!!! David breaks!!! Now serve it out this time!!!
@Jenny... lol
They couldn't have picked a worse time to switch off the match. It made me feel the match was over. I went looking for confirmation on live scores, and saw it was thankfully still in progress.
Games, Set and Match David 6-4, 6-4.......Oh wait he lost the first set =(
yessssssssss
1 set all
total pints won 75 = 75
lets c, cmoooooooooooon
the croud is getting envolved in every point now, vamosss
PHEWWW!!! 6-4 David takes the second after facing a BP on serve.
I thought he almost blew it with that overhead smash he missed!
The 2 handed bh is starting to make its presence felt again!
Yes!!
David apparently signalling to Lobo that he's okay, that he can go on.
Is there anything more stressful than watching David trying to serve out a set?
@Jenny lol
Yea, he was serving for the first set up a break at 5-3 too. It would have really hurt if he had lost it serving for the 2nd set as well.
I don't like the gesture he made to his team at the end of the second set!! did anyone see that? I'm afraid it means he's not feeling good :s
thank u 4 the gift Traver, he need it
Breaks to start the 3rd set!!!
Vamos!!! :rocker: :bounce: :bigclap:
Is there a way to get emoticons on here, Julia? lol
Ah Julia..I didn't see your post. That's more relieving! :)and it makes sense since he's still playing ;)
Is he okay? My coffee's so strong, you can stand a spoon up in it. Hold David.
I think he meant to say he's okay but will stop if he doesn't feel good. With that gesture.
And no, no emoticons here, Tim. Sorry. ;)
Why is he having trouble with smashes today? Wierd! It is like a good shot for Gimeno-Traver today to hit a desperation lob that doesn't go deeper than the service line.
Phew! Nice hold. 2-0. :)
3 service holds david , cmmon keep it together
I feel good when David is on the backhand side right now.
He is grimacing. This match must be tough from a pure physical exhaustion perspective. The exhos couldn't compare.
YESSS!!! 4-2 Hang on there, David!
2 more service holds david, u can do it
Nice forehand finally! :P
Ohhhh. Beautiful dropshot!! :D
40-0
5-3!!! :))
Yes he can!
David is up 5-3 and receiving. Hopefully, he can break here, but you never know
MP for David. Gimeno-Traver saves it with an ace.
Benji, yes there is. - Watching David trying to serve out a match. ;)
David to serve for it. Come on, David...take this!!
1 service left david, do it for us plssss
David has fallen behind on serve 15-30. Come on!!! Double bp for Gimeno-Traver. Here we go.
Back on serve. Come on, David, try to break again.
Oh no... :-(
Oooh!! Crap! 2/3 sets today serving for the set one break up and he fails to do it! :(
Break him back, David!
Lobo needs to work with him on this failing to hold serve when serving for the match thing. Doubt if he will have any success, but this has to stop. You take your chances when you have them instead of trying to play from behind.
@Tiffany
He even faced a BP serving for the 2nd set and barely gutted it out. All 3 sets he has been up a break serving for the set and struggled each time.
Ouch! 40-15 to Deuce. :(
OMG!! Finally holds! Tiebreak!
Let's go, David!!!
Gimeno-Traver hates that dropper. :))
3-1. Vamos!!
Poor Nalby! :(
6-6 What a marathon match!
MP #3 for David; he gets the mini-break. He really needs to get that serve in order!!
MP #4; break him here!!! And David wins it!!! 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6 (7). What a nail-biter!!!
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
8-6 in the tiebreak!!! Ooooh! What a relief!
:=D
He got a full workout test today. lol
Nailbiter indeed! He did it, but some pain I think. He'll rest tomorrow. Well done David!
OMGGGGGG
i cant believe it, wut a tiebreak, wut a nerves wut a forehand winner to finish with
now i know y we love davidddd
Yea, 9-7 in the last tiebreak.
Phew!! It is good to win a tight one like that for confidence.
2-0 for the year.
David,please think about my heart next time you play!
@Noubar
Nalby just did that on purpose with Gimeno-Traver.
It's called the EXTREME rope-a-dope strategy. lol
Now they show David playing with remote control mini-cars? :=D
I got so carried away that it forgot to take notes during the final tiebreak... lol
What a match...
Wow! What a thriller that third set, amazing!!!
@Benji
Has David ever done anything but make his fans hearts go through a rollercoaster? That is part of why his matches are so fun...drama up the ying yang! ;)
Did you record it, Andvari?
Yes I have Julia, its divided in three parts with only missing a couple of points during the end of the second set and beginning of the third. I'll upload it tomorrow, I really gotta catch some sleep, lol. At least I can sleep better now knowing David is through. Good night everybody!
Thank you and goodnight. :)
@Tim
It's the way he can go from the most sublime tennis to the most ridiculous UE.
David was showing so much fight out there. I thought he was going to get penalised points for that racket smash in his last service game!
Good night, all. :-)
@Benji
I was smashing a few things too... lol
Exactly! One match, like in the first set against Starace, you're thinking "how does this guy ever lose any sets?" Then in this match, his drop shots were just awesome, but he couldn't put away easy overheads. And the serve, especially on important games, is always like watching a thriller...who knows what will happen? :)) This match could have easily gone down 6-3, 6-4 if he been serving better.
tim lol, so he tested him self ha , wanted a tiebreak, anywayz thank god he won
@ Advari, hope u put it o youtube, only some parts or nice points, not any other file sharing website.
i was very close 4 having a heart attack today. pheww
gd night, and julia, we r waitin 4 the new post and pics already, all the best.
I don't think tonight the serve was a problem,I mean he wasn't spraying DF's everywhere. He just seem to get very tight on his groundstrokes in the crucial moments. And the leg injury was obviously hampering his overheads.
Now I've calmed down,I think it is only fair to give a whole lot of credit to Gimeno-Traver,who I hadn't seen before. His serve and FH were very impressive.
The only reason there weren't many double faults is because he was floating first serves in.
Goodnight Istabraq and Noubar.
Benji (and Tim, who mentioned it during the match) - I think that David was never particularly good at hitting overhead shots. Okay, a few spectacular backhand smashs here and there. But generally speaking, I've never thought of overhead shots as one of David's strengths.
I guess what really impressed me today is that he was able to hang in there. And that he was able to make adjustments in terms of his tactics.
And Anonymous, I think it's better to float in first serves and rely on your ability to win the point in the rally than to take too much of a risk with them.
How many of us survived this? Well, it's not the first time at leat there wasn't MP to save..
His team was saying him to abandone the match, but he didn't do it because it was the Argentine ATP, he said it after the match.
And he also said that he will be playing the next round, even if he had to do it on one leg, that he did it before (some people thinks it was an indirect to Del Potro...)
This guy CAN NOT play the DC tie: the same thing he did today here because he was playing in ARgentina, he'll do it and worst for the DC (he did it before!)
I wanted to kiss him for doing what he did today because he was playing in his country, and at the same time I wanted to hit him because it's not the time to risk his body like that...
Julia,fair point on the overheads,although he rarely misses them when he's playing well.
Rolling the serve in is OK on a clay court,but he'll need more juice on it when he returns to the hardcourt.
Goodnight all,and once again,congratulations to David for pulling out the victory!
ok, bad new: DAVID HAS A 3 MM STRAIN (DISTENSION IN SPANISH, DON'T KNOW IF IT'S THE CORRECT WORD) WITH AN EDEMA. THIS IS WHAT THE TV SAID IT WAS THE REPORT FROM THE TOURNAMENT DOCTOR.
They said David wants to play and he's going to wait how it progress. But that it takes 10 days to recover.
I know this things are very common when a player is coming back after a lot of time without playing, his body is not used to that work, but....F***k!
That's very bad news, indeed...
Did they say strain or tear?
They said it again but they also said that David didn't retire from the tournament... I don't know. The tournament's doctor said that. But they have some scan machine or whatever in the tournament? They're saying this only 45 minutes after the match ended...
They said "distension" in spanish. I looked at the dictionary and the translation would be strain not tear. They said "distension con un edema"
I guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow for some confirmation.
Seems this WOULD BE the diagnosis in spanish "Distensión en el aductor de la pierna derecha Grado 1 Con edema de 3mm."
If it's a strain, he might be able to play. But if it's a tear (and I'm asking because of the 3mm) then there's probably not much of a chance...
But if he hasn't withdrawn from the tournament then it's probably a strain.
Yeah, things like that can happen, especially during tough matches like this one...
And yeah, we'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out more.
Okay, so it's a strain with an edema. Grade 1 - I don't know if that's good or bad?
I just now that I'm going to bed now. And that I'll have to find out more about David's right thigh tomorrow...
grade 1 strain is not that bad, it's only edema, so with antiiinflamatory medication it should be ok. it's up to david if he plays or not.
David played his 2. match and got injured again. I can't imagin that he remains fit after a 3-5 set match in Davis Cup. He should leave it, even if it is painful.
Well i study medicine, and i know a little bit about this stuff, as far as i remember the Grade 1 muscle strain is a destruction in an individual muscle fiber (5%), and needs 1 week to recover.
Grade - 1 associated with edema, is the same case but with accumulation of fluid (most likely plasma) between the surface of the musle fibers and the skin.So it's up 2 david
Well, according to people in other blog (fue Buena, they're journalist from Ole) David will be doing a scan today at 18:30 to see how the thing goes.
Wow, first I read the good news and then I continue reading and there's bad news :( I hate it when I go back to work and the university, I get all the news late and all together!
