Interlude: Davis Cup Dilemma

Maybe you'll remember, after the news came about Delpo having pulled out of the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Sweden (March 5-7), an article appeared on DiarioShow.com, claiming that David isn't going to play in Stockholm, either. And that this simply hasn't been made public yet.
Since then, David has talked about his undying passion for playing Davis Cup in various interviews, always stressing that he really wants to play the tie, even without getting enough preparation.

Now there's a new article from Infobae.com that maybe helps to shed some light on the whole situation and the conflicting reports...
Less than three weeks before the start of the Davis Cup 2010 and now that the captains of the other countries begin to submit their team nominations for the first round, Modesto "Tito" Vázquez knows he cannot count on Juan Martin Del Potro and that the presence of Nalbandian largely depends on what his doctors say.

And the doctors, as David himself said yesterday, are having none of it, none of this rushing of things, let alone with a sudden change of surface in the middle of it all, going from the clay of Buenos Aires and Acapulco, the only two tournaments before the tie, to playing in Stockholm on an extremely fast carpet surface. [According to the Davis Cup website, the surface in Stockholm will be "hard", not that it makes any difference.]

"The doctors have advised me not to play (Davis Cup) because I could risk my rehabilitation. But I really want to play," Nalbandian said after his 6-2 7-6(2) victory over the Italian Potito Starace.
So it looks like David will once again have to decide between his passion for playing Davis Cup and the risk it could mean for his health. When faced with similar situations in the past, David chose to play. And we know what came out of that... It remains to be seen what his decision will be, this time around.

Update
On a lighter note, here's a new Q&A (in English) with David.

Julia, i checked the weather forecast in BA, it is sunny and partly cloudy, so there will be no rain delay today whatsoever, Winds: 5 to 10 mph.which is better than yesterday.

Julia, thanks for posting the article. When I first heard David might be pulling out of DC I didn't think of it as bailing. We know him too well to believe that. But I think his concern about his schedule and also listening to the doctors is wise. Originally I thought Delpo would be the horse that pulled the wagon at Stockholm in March anyway. If David was fit then he would only be there to help out. Delpo's injury changed all that. I think it's too much to expect David to do it all. But of course we know he would try. I can't help but think about Kuerten and Hewitt when it comes to hip injuries. After watching David play yesterday I want to see him around for 2 or 3 more years. I'd prefer he not take the risk so soon. For today, though, it's Vamos David.

Noubar, thanks for checking the forecast. Sounds good. :)
I'll make an extra post for tonight's match where we can discuss it.

John, yeah, impossible to think that David would pull out of a DC tie without having a very good reason. The problem is (and has been ever since Delpo pulled out) that David might choose to play, even against the explicit advice of his doctors. It wouldn't be the first time, after all... But well, in the end, it's of course up to him to decide.

Hehe, Julia in the other post where some1 asked u if ur an Argentine and u Said ur German, i knew that, but i just remembered in Auckland David was schudeled to face Kohlchriber, didn't that feel weird that u were against your countryman? or u were like whoever wins that match works 4 u. LOL

Julia said...

No, that was an easy choice for me. I really don't like Kohlschreiber. ;) And I don't like any German player enough to be in some kind of patriotic bind whenever David plays against one of them.

I can c wut you mean, but i have 2 say if i had to choose one German, i would name Tommy Haas.
btw since when did u do this blog? i knew about it since like 2 month maybe, Tamar told me about it.
Plus we have a Nalbandian group on facebook, in which me and Tamar are the admins, i always link ur posts and stuff there, a lot of ppl are active in it, if u have facebook u can join it sometimes, it's not as good as Vamos David, but it's good enough lol

If I had to choose a German player, it would be Mischa Zverev. :)
VD began in June 2008, originally started by Arizona (who left last autumn).
And thanks for the invitation but I'm not on Facebook. I'll just do my thing, here. :)

I can understand David's dilemma regarding Davis Cup. Head or heart, a tough choice, he has given so much to Davis Cup over the years. I don't know, it's up to David of course, but personally I would love for him to win his elusive slam on the main Tour, after all he did reach a Wimbledon final! Also, best wishes to David second round against Gimeno Traver.

Tamar, thanks for the photos. I've added them to the "photo page". And I hope you have a great time. :)

Jenny, yeah, it'll be a tough choice for him to make. And I really don't whether this time, he'll make that decision with his head and not his heart...
