The Day of David's Return

(Infobae.com)

Update
After David won the first set 6-2 the match had to be suspended due to rain.
It seems unlikely that play can resume tonight and the match will probably have to be finished tomorrow. I'll try to keep you posted.

(Daniel Feldman/Clarin)

After 287 days of waiting for us, hip surgery and rehabilitation for David, countless interviews, a first training session streamed live on the net, some promising matches at San Juan and the Copa Argentina, a trip to Auckland and an abdominal tear - the day has now finally come for David's comeback.

At 7.30pm local, David will walk onto the Cancha Central at the BALTC to play his first match since May 4, 2009. And I'm almost finding it a little difficult to believe that we'll actually get to see him play, tonight...

More stream links will be posted in the sidebar in time for the match. If you have a link you'd like to share, please post it in the comments.

And here's what David looks like, now. This photo is from Saturday's event at the Parque de los Niños...

More photos can be found here. (Thanks, Tamar.)
And here (on the forum at David Ferrer's site; thanks Jenny.)

Just a few more hours to go now...

Well, good luck to David in his return. He didn't got an easy draw.
As a good luck thing I'll post what I said at the exhibitions: let's not expect David to win, not even talkng about the tournament, he's coming back after 9 months. And didn't get the best rival to do it. I really want him to win this night, but let's be prepare for a lose, because it's the most probable thing.
Well, besides saying this for "good luck" or "Cabala" like we said here (it worked great in November ;) ) let's take it easy and not expect great results, he has to get the timing back.

Anna said...

I forgot! Thanks for the pictures
He looks really good there...

Noubar said...

We know he might lose, but if he gets out what he has in his package, who knows.Plus i just realized that David is the only Argentine in the top half, he is stuck with the spaniards, 5 more hours guyz, we get to see him playing on clay, if his serve turned to be good tonight, with the croud supporting him, he might have a chance, now am gna get some sleep and feel my batteries for tonight, c u then.

Well, to be honest it's like I'm divided in two: my logical side, that thinks all the I posted, and the other one, that gives a damn that and wants David Champion. But like I did it before, I said what I posted because, first, it's the reallity and second, for luck (I worked for the exhibitions).
Also, there's an interview of David here http://www.clarin.com/diario/2010/02/15/um/m-02140596.htm
I read it in the news paper and I found it online for translation. It talks about all: the comeback, the Davis and, at least in paper, there's a part where he says he enjoyed taking care of his nephews and he'd like to have kids (probably he means in a near future, not now).
About the DC he said "I'd play it on a wheelchair"... yep, David is back.

Anna said...

Well, the part of the having a family it doens't appear there, like also, it doesn't show one phrase of him "there're players that wants to win the Davis and others that doesn't care... who? Figure it yourself, you're journalist, do your job"

Julia said...

Thanks Anna for the interview. I don't have the time now to translate it but I'll add that photo to the post.
I'll see you all later for the match. :)

Noubar said...

here is a translation: 1/2
Finite gray striped shirt with white, beige shorts, brown sandals and also gray cap with the words "Harley Davidson" on a hot afternoon, with the sun melts the cement and tempting to sit facing the air conditioned restaurant Vilas Club ...

"Until I know, you still have a contract with Yonex, right?

"Yes, I think they are two or three years. Why?

"I say this because as the pictures we do not have anything because of the brand ...

"No matter ...

The answer (and gesture) distended by David Nalbandian is a true reflection of the actual hours of Cordoba, who is ready for dialogue with Clarin a few hours of his official return for the points at the Copa Telmex.

- How do you feel?

"I'm fine, wanting to play. The tear was a hock and now, with more weeks of training, accumulated more win and I feel good. I'm tired of training and not compete. This is not the prettiest tennis.
What you missed tournament and said "can not wait to be there?

"The people of this year, Auckland and Australia. Is that until last year was not 100 percent and now was ready.

"On television, you see something different in the circuit?

-A Davydenko, who was again a candidate in every tournament he plays, and the entire litter of young people who come, who are all very equal level. In reality, bringing to Federer, Murray, Djokovic and Nadal are all tough

Noubar said...

2/2:
Have you ever thought about leaving?

"No, never. Let's see, if I and my hip still hurts, something is going to cross over his head. But now I feel great to think of a retreat.

"At this time, what could you do something you've never done since you play tennis?

"I did what I always do when I take a break: I was with my family and my girlfriend, my friends. What happens is that if you're on the track You do that occasionally and I had more time here to live from day to day.

- What to expect from people in the hall?

"Here people always answer me and I'm super grateful. Hopefully I can give the courts will come to see me. I will miss be fine, but I will not be wrong.

"When you saw him beat Juan Martin Del Potro at Flushing Meadows, how did you feel?

"For me, beyond that have earned John Martin, Monaco or Acasuso, we must take all happy ending because the sport is winning Argentine national tennis. It also means that if he does, I too can achieve. Since when did Wimbledon final and then seized Coria, Gaudio, Puerta, Canas ...

- Have you ever thought how close you were?

"But that criticizes me who wins. I always say I was there, as in the semifinal of the U.S. Open I went to play torn, I broke my hand and I was match point.

"Ultimately, what objectives back?

"It's all a consequence. If I win tournaments'll climb in the rankings, but what I want is to play two, three, four weeks in a row without pain. The first objective is to be healthy to compete at the highest level. Then I will assess how to see what can enroll.

Nalbandian just came to watch Almagro match, h seems happy and laughing :D

Anna said...

Well, Gimeno Traver won.. if David wins this night the second match would be easier than what we thought..
And no, I'm not nervious at all, nope... ;)

Julia said...

Okay, so I'm back now. In time. :)

I've just had a look at the other stream sites, those that usually show the Bet365 stream but - nothing. So far, it seems like it's either Bet365 or one of the justin.tv streams...

Sorry to hear that you're having problems with your connection, Noubar...
And thanks Andreas, or should I maybe say danke?
And yeah Anna, so it would be Gimeno-Traver in the second round. Just like last year, by the way.

Andreas said...

Julia, I am from Sweden! vamos david. soon matchstart, i will watch at bet365 stream.

Julia said...

Okay so then it's tack. ;)
I've just been wondering whether there are any German-Speaking fans around. And your name sounds German...
Yeah, Bet365 it'll be for me, too.

Julia said...

Okay. So here we go...

Noubar said...

Noubar said...

yesssssssss
2-0 nalbandian, he is playin better than before, very solid

ashot007armenia said...

Nalbandian can't win his service by 2:0. At moment he plays with errors.

ashot007armenia said...

1. set at present 3:0 for Nalbandian. It was a long game Nalby's 2. service game

Sol said...

Hi Joolz and people!
Solid tennis from Nalbandian, everything looks good, the serve, the volleys (even though he missed that backhand volley), the forehand is on fire, he's moving well too... I'm so relieved. Phew.

Andreas said...

4-0 it looks amazing for being the first atp match since may 09. :D

Jenny said...

Hi, Joolz, Sol and all.

ashot007armenia said...

Nalbandian makes also errors, but he so trys to get the feeling with the ball.

Jenny said...

David looking good so far.

Julia said...

Hi Jenny and Sol. :)
Yeah, this is the "new forehand" we already got to see at the exhos.
Some things however haven't changed. Like his first serve percentage...
Still, a good start.

Sol said...

Hi Jenny!
What's your opinion so far?
It feels like he gets tired when he gets into long rallies, but otherwise he's looking good, don't you think?

Sol said...

Sorry, our posts crossed.
Serving for the set!

ashot007armenia said...

Nalbandian breaked by 4:1 to 5:1 without losing a game and with the same result he losed his service, the old Nalbandian with bad service.

Sol said...

Beautiful defense and passing shot!
This is good tennis!

ashot007armenia said...

David losed 2 games in 1. set and both by own service. He plays only by retourn games good at the moment.

Julia said...

Yeah, his serve is far from impressive at the moment. But I like how aggressively he plays from the baseline.

Noubar said...

Game- 1st set nalbandian
amazing point that was from nalbandian, cmmon keep it together david

Julia said...

Oh no...

Noubar said...

its raining, hope wont effect him

Sol said...

Damn. I have to work tomorrow so I'm not going to wait for the rain to stop. From what I've seen so far, David is playing great so I'm not too worried. Enjoy the rest of the match!

ashot007armenia said...

it reigns in Buenos Aires! Break!

Julia said...

Just when I thought it might have stopped raining, they showed the thunder and and lightning... And the rain still falling.
I can't believe this. It's like the tennis gods have made some sort of sinsister pact against David...

Noubar said...

i know julia, unlucky david, he was on fire, hope he plays the same, btw when the rain stops? they play immediately? or if the court wet there r some actions?

John said...

David looks quite good despite being broken twice. I counted 10 winners and 5 points at the net. That's impressive in only 8 games. Good aggressive tennis. Keep it up David.

Noha said...

Hi everyone..thanks for the great efforts to find a live stream, much appreciated :)

He played really well in the 1st set, considering it's his first match since May last year. Hope he maintains that level after the rain stops. Impressive forehand indeed, and, well the serve is more or less the same. He looks like he's enjoying himself though which is a positive sign. Apparently, this long pause made him appreciate the game much more :)

Jenny said...

Aw no, it's pelting down and just when David was getting into his stride.

Julia said...

I'm hoping that Tamar, who's there at the BALTC, might find a way of lettng us know whether the match has been cancelled.
The stream has just stopped and that's not a good sign...

Julia said...

No - there it is again...

Istabraq said...

Someone just told me they have called it a day, but I don't know how she knows...or IF she knows :-(

Noubar said...

http://www.justin.tv//poipoi53#r=xUMf0xY
this stream is working
and i think they will delay the match untill 2morrow, its getting a swimming pool in the court, impossible to play, and to sun to suck the water up

Julia said...

I think that if it was clear that the match is cancelled the stream would stop. But now they're showing Hanescu/Schwank. Which makes me think they're still waiting for David's match to continue...

Noubar said...

hope they cancel it, thats better, david would come fresh again tomorrow

Noubar said...

am out to bed, hopefully when i wake up, i either c nalbandian won the match, or delayed, gd night every1

Jenny said...

Thanks for the update, Julia. All very frustrating.

Julia said...

I'd just really like to know what's happening... I mean, it's nice that they're showing us another match now. And as long as there's still a stream, I think there's still hope. But I'd prefer being shown the stadium. To see if there's any sign of play resuming...

Anonymous said...

I just saw a lot of rain on the stream.

Julia said...

They just showed live pics from the stadium. And it is raining cats and dogs in Buenos Aires...

Julia said...

- Like you said, Anonymous. Just saw your post.
This doesn't look good...

Julia said...

It's still pouring in Buenos Aires. And by now, I don't really think that play can resume tonight.
So I'm going to bed now.
After half a comeback match...

Andvari said...

Ok. Goodnight Julia, I will stay up for an hour or so I think. I can't sleep anyway, so I will try to record if they stream anything.

Tim said...

I'm watching http://www.justin.tv/apokalipsalsh/popout/

Still just showing the Hanesku-Schwank match.

Great that he won the first set though in such a convincing fashion!

Ironic that we would get another "delay" of some sort. As the saying goes, "when it rains it pours". lol

Sorry for the pun!

John said...

It does look pretty grim. Can't imagine the court could dry out tonight even if it quit raining. Good pun, Tim.

Tiffany said...

The Hanescu/Schwank match is not live; it's a tape delay. The scoreboard has already posted the result of that match.

Tim said...

I feel relieved that Almagro got upset. He has been a very tough player on clay the past several years. So if David can get some rest and play another set tomorrow, I'd like his chances to continue to R3.

Little article at http://elpaisdeargentina.blogspot.com/2010/02/nalbandian-gano-el-primer-set-ante-el.html and the infamous Google Translator (published 13 minutes ago)

David Nalbandian won 6-2 in the first part of the game they play in the Copa Telmex. Then the game was rained out.

Nalbandian, who returned to tennis after nine of absence for surgery on his hip, showed a very good tennis in his return, especially in the first four games, which overwhelmed the Italian.

The Cordovan always tried to take the lead, even when he drew was his rival and that paid him greatly at the beginning of the meeting as quickly 4-0 ahead with two consecutive breaks.

Dressed in a blue shirt that marked his body worked, "is much thinner than before the operation, 2009 -, the Cordoba was up slowly to the 3,500 people who came to Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club to watch him play.

Only in the fourth game and taking advantage of a pair of Nalbandian's errors, the Italian won his first game in a set that was marked by errors-especially European-product of the strong wind Laver Arena.

The last four games of the set were the strangest thing because none of the two players managed to win his serve, but still handed over Argentina to take the partial 6-2 before the rain to go away.

Andvari said...

The match between Nalbandian and Starace is scheduled after the Gasquet vs Chela match tomorrow that will not begin before 1:45 pm local time.

Thanks, Andvari! That is good news. It gives him enough time to rest, but also will give him time, if he should win, before his next match.

Hi everyone!
I arrived home at 12pm. really, any of you can't imagine how it was raining here in bs as... all the streets were flooded. People walking in the streets with water up to their waist... it was a mess to get out of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis. Really a mess... I have never lived something similar, it was a disaster. And the worst thing it's that in TV, the news, are saying that the metheorological alert continues and that it's probable that will continue raining...
Well, apart from that, this is my daily report :)
I arrived to the BALTC around 6.40pm, and I checked if David was training in some of the 4 auxiliar courts (that are for train). Finally, I find him. He was in one of the auxiliar courts with Luis Lobo, Claudio Galasso and Diego Rodriguez (I took photos:). First, when he finish doing the "entarda en calor" (how do you say it in english??) all his team went out of the court, and around 7.10 David went out. He saw me and, while he was walking, he shouted me "¡Hola! ¿Como andas?" ("Hi! How are you?") :) Hey, anyone noticed that David has his hair cut again? Well, after the training, it was the match. I saw David quite good, in perfect phisic shape, concise, accurate, and in a very good moore. I'm still thinking in that incredible point in which he answered a smash and finally he won the point... and all the stadium was up, clapping, and I think David start laghing and saying "thank you" with his hand... Also I'm still thinking in 2 balls (drops) in which David stayed in his place, what i mean is, he didn't run...
At 9.15pm, when it was raining, the organizers announced that they will wait one hour to decide what to do with David's and Gaudio's matches. At 10.30 they announced that the matches were officially cancelled, and that they will play them on tuesday.
We had to wait a lot to get out of the BALTC because of the rain... it was incredible, unbelievable. When I finally decided to get out of the BALTC I started walking to go to the bus stop... I have just get out of the BALTC when I see - who? DAVID! He was also trapped there hahaha, and he was trying to arrive to the garage to get his car. When I saw him I shouted "David!", and he shouted "hola!" ("hi!") but he didn't look at me, so i think he didn't realized I was the person who was shouting... Then, when he was walking next to me, I told him "Mañana, a ganar eh!" (that's to say, something like: "tommorrow, win, please!" If any of you find a better translation, would be great haha). And he give me a kiss, as saying hello to me. He started walking... He entered somewhere, and, a couple of minutes later, I realized he entered to the garage because he get out of it, driving his mini-cooper...
Well, this is my daily report ;)

Hey... i'm the only one who thinks that David could be the champion of the Copa Telmex? uups! maybe I musn't have said it... as a "cábala" (cabbala)? ;)

Noubar said...

What a lovely report Tamar, TY
and for the records, no you aren't d only 1 who thinks david can win this, i was impressed with his game yesterday, hopefully he will put the match to bed today, now david ferrer is the only dangerous one in his section, that he could face in the SF, gd luck

Andreas said...

loved your report tamar, thx! I wish i could be there and see david live, last time was in stockholm sweden when he took the title. It was amazing. I think david look physically better now and i think that is good for his game. hope he wins second set easy today. vamos

Krystle Lee said...

Thanks for the comments everyone. I hope the forecast isn't too grim for tomorrow. I can't say that it bothered me that it rained, so I can get a chance to catch the second half of the match. But from reports above, it sounded very rainy indeed. The weather is a bit like that right here at the moment as well. I'm pleased that Almagro lost. This definitely clears up the draw for him nicely, and gives him a better chance of more match play.

Julia said...

Yeah, thanks for the report, Tamar. :)
It's great that you got a chance to see him, despite the whole rain chaos.
And of course I noticed he had his hair cut. No ponytail anymore!
About how he looked in terms of the match, I'm going to write a post about that now.
And I hope you'll send me a couple of photos... :)

And thanks for the video clip, Andvari. I'll use it for the new post.
