Davis Cup: Juan Monaco out as well...

What was his suspicion already last night has by now become a fact - during his semifinal match at Acapulco yesterday, Juan "Pico" Monaco suffered a tear in the left abdominal area. And because of this injury, he won't be able to play the upcoming Davis Cup tie in Stockholm. In David's and Delpo's absence, captain Tito Vázquez was planning to rely on Pico as his #1 singles player.
With Pico now out as well, Vázquez has apparently decided against calling one of the more experienced players (like Chela, who has said he wants to play). Instead, as canchallena.com reports, Argentina's captain is going to nominate 19-year-old talent Federico Delbonis (currently ranked #211).
But it will probably fall to 22-year-old Leonardo Mayer to lead the Argentine squad as #1 singles player in Stockholm. Mayer, currently ranked #69, has contested exactly one Davis Cup match so far (last year against the Czech Republic where he played the doubles with Chucho).
In other words, if Argentina's chances seemed fairly slim to begin with, divine intervention will probably now be required to see Argentina's youngest team in years through to the next round.
At the same time, David will now curse himself even more for not being able to help his team...

Apart from that there's not much to report at the moment. No news from David. Hopefully because he's busy, training and getting ready for Indian Wells. Speaking of which - I will take this chance to make an...

Announcement

concerning that particular tournament and Vamos David.
I have a very important exam coming up in March that I will need to concentrate on. Therefore I won't be able to report anything that happens at Indian Wells.
But luckily enough for me and for you, my good friend Krystle (you may know her blog Tennis Brain) has agreed to cover for me. So, during Indian Wells, she'll be in charge of Vamos David and she'll keep you posted about David and his matches.

And for the DC tie.. well, I'm waiting for Vazquez's call to play. What? I'm argentine and I can play tennis, badly, but I can! Ok, I'm a woman, but still... jejeje.
With all the respect to Delbonis, WTF?!
Please, I only ask an easy rival for the World Group playoffs!
I can't imagine how David must feel with Monaco's injury (even when I think Pico was going to have a lot of troubles to adjust, but still Monaco plays double often).
As I read in some blog, it feels like Vazquez is trowing the tie, he's giving up. He's not going to call Chela, who has several problems playing Davis, but at least he has experience (he played a final). Vinciguerra is ranked 235 and has a clay background. Ok, he has a lot of injuries, he born there and knows the court, etc, but he's not playing regulary. He matches are accesible. (at least in papers... )
But Vazquez calls a kid with zero experience in the ATP and with proyection but not looking like a future David, Coria, Delpo...

First of all - thanks Anna. :)
But I don't think that Delbonis is going to play a match, least of all a live rubber. I think that Vázquez will have Mayer and Zeballos play singles and one or the other play the doubles with Schwank. In the end, it's a tie Argentina can't really win, anyway...

Vamos Julia. That has a nice ring to it. Noubar, you rock. Best of luck on your exam, Julia. All your world-wide fans are pulling for you. Things could get really interesting in your absence, what with Anna bidding to play in the DC tie. Go for it, Anna. Hope those of you in Argentina felt nothing more than a little shake from the earthquake in Chile. What a tragedy.

hehe thank u John, it just came out after i had 2 beers u know, glad everybody liked it.
Anyways, can;t wait for IW, but concerning the DC, it's a gameover, unless a miracle comes out and infects Soderling with a virus lol

I think with Mayer and Zeballos playing singles, both have decent chances against the Sweden no.2. The doubles will be an uphill battle.

I don't want to take anything away from Monaco, but I'm not sure any of that would be different with him on the team.

As for David's decision to play DC (thanks, Anonymous for the tip), all I can say is "though this be madness, yet there is method in it"...
