David's Comeback Match Part I - Review

(Óle)

After 47 minutes, a record-breaking total of six breaks in eight games and David taking the first set 6-2, his comeback match against Potito Starace had to be suspended last night because of torrential rains in Buenos Aires.
Hopefully, the match will be continued today (third match Cancha Central, after Gasquet vs Chela; around 3.15pm local) as the weather forecast predicts more rain... (Key statements from a new interview with David as well as more photos from last night I've added here.)

(Marcelo Figueras/Clarin)

A look back at what happened last night.
Walking into the stadium to play his first match after nine months, David seemed surprisingly relaxed and more happy to finally be back than nervous. My impression also was that he looked fitter than he did in December for the exhos and that he has lost a few more kilos. Another thing he has lost - his trademark ponytail. Directly before the start of the match, David made a gesture with his hand that, with hindsight, can only be called prophetic as he held out his hand, feeling for rain...

David had to serve first, started the match with a first backhand winner and without displaying any signs of nerves managed to hold to 30. A good start and very important in that moment, though it would be the last time that he was able to hold fairly comfortably.
On return, however, David came out all guns blazing. From the start, he got a good read on Starace's serve, both first and second, and was able to put the Italian under immediate pressure with aggressive, deep returns that either drew errors or allowed David control of the rallies. The result were two break points for David in this game, the second of which he was able to convert when Starace's attempt to counter David's drop-shot with a drop-shot of his own landed wide. Break David, 2-0.
David's next service game saw the first bit of serve & volley from him. But it also saw his first serve percentage starting to go down and David struggling on second serve. After wasting a couple of game points with backhand errors, David had to save a first breakpoint before he finally "pulled himself together again" and managed to consolidate his break with a beautiful forehand long-line. 3-0.
Back on return, David continued to look more comfortable then when serving. It was during the return games that David was able to play with more variety and come to the net, thanks his returns. Even if he missed three of those in this game, all three of them at break point... But only to follow it up with yet another great one that set up a fourth one and this time, it was a forehand error by Starace that gave David the double break and a 4-0 lead.
But that double break was short-lived. At this point, the service games on both sides (except the very first one) had been hard-fought and included several deuces. But this was to change now. A rather sloppy game from David with several unforced errors and an admittedly great drop-shot by Starace saw the Italian recover one of the breaks, 4-1. But only to then immediately drop his own serve again to love with a really poor game. Double break restored, 5-1.
Then it was David's turn to serve for the match... With David quickly down 0-30, Starace managed to outplay David with a drop-shot/passing shot combination that set up 3 break points. And then Starace followed it up with a forehand winner. Re-break again, 5-2.
This was the moment I thought David might have lost his focus or that maybe, he was growing a little tired. But the next (and last) game would prove me wrong. After another great return to set up the forehand winner and get to 15-30, the moment came for the most spectacular rally of the night... But you can see it for yourself, in the YouTube clip below (thanks, Andvari!). Eventually, David converted his second set point and in style - with a return winner.

All in all, I'd say that it was a good start. Just like in the exho matches last December, David's forehand seemed improved and more solid than it often was in the past. He played very aggressively from the baseline and constructed his points well, often using his backhand to set up the eventual winner (which often came with the forehand). I also thought that he moved well, given the circumstances. The only thing that was far from impressive was his serve... It'll be interesting to see whether he simply had a bad serving day or whether there's more to it. - And I can only hope that we'll get to see it today, that the match can be finished...

For a clay court, the surface was surprisingly slick. David was hitting return winners like he was on indoor carpet.

It was such a treat watching David play last night. Keep it going David. Must confess, I do miss the trademark ponytail that was unique to him.

Noubar said...

hahah me 2 jenny, but i missed his return winners even more LOL

So, I thought I read yesterday the match would be after 1:45 pm local time. But the links and Julia's update indicate it will not start until 3:15 pm.

Sorry Noubar! :( What time is it where you are at. At least it is relatively early still, eh?

Julia said...

It will start after the match that's currently taking place, Gasquet vs Chela. :)
The good thing is that the justin.tv streams are already working. So you can see what's going on. And it's not raining (at least for now).

Tim said...

Well, I'm watching now and the rain seems to be staying away as all matches are in progress. I'm looking at the current weather forecast in Buenos Aires, and although it is Overcast, only trace amounts of rain are expected today:

http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/87582.html

Julia, love the quotes by David: "If I win, I'm thin....I don't carry weight records around with me." lol

Julia said...

Lots of clouds over Buenos Aires... But at least it's only 22°C. (No idea what that is in Fahrenheit.)

Tim, yeah, that's a good one from David. Made laugh when I read it...

Tim said...

It looks like the cloud cover will be disappearing rapidly as the day progresses. Here is the hourly forecast, again only chance for trace amounts of rain. It should be good!

Noubar said...

i only hope this won't go into a decider set, u never know wut might happen then, all the luck 2 david.

Julia said...

They just showed David, warming up on one of the practice courts...

Julia said...

I can't believe it... It's raining again. But they'r still playing. Hopefully just a light shower...

Noubar said...

i saw him, he was wearing red :D, little bit celebrating valentine on his own way lol

Noubar said...

u sure u saw rain Jul, am watchin the match, didnt notice dat yet

Julia said...

You can see the people in the stands under their umbrellas. But that's the good think about clay, as long as it's not raining hard they can continue.

Noubar said...

OMG it's not a very light rain, i think there will be a delaying scenario 2day

John said...

Don't think rain, Julia. Think sun. Nothing against Gasquet, but I hope Chela wins in straight sets. No need to chance the weather. We want David to get on and off the court in under an hour like last night.

Tim said...

Of course Gasquet and Chela have to be playing one of those 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 type matches! :(

Any breaks of serve in this one? I haven't really been giving it much attention.

Julia said...

- And play is suspended.

I was trying to think sun John. Doesn't look like it worked...

Noubar said...

knew it, suspended, what d hell, this could go forever

Tim said...

John, the hourly forecast predicts "trace" amounts at worst for the whole day. This isn't going to be a big issue today which is a relief:

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=zmw:00000.1.87582&hourly=1&yday=46&weekday=Tuesday

I think we are so used to delays, we have a hard time imagining something going smoothly. lol

Tim said...

You're kidding right! Play is suspended? ROTFL Let me get stream going again....

I guess optimists are rarely right. lol

Tim said...

According to "Live Scores" the Chela/Gasquet match is suspended but the matches on Court 2 and 3 are still going onwards. It must not be too bad. Of course the score being 7-6, 3-3, it may be awhile...

Tim said...

Ventura just defeated Koellerer on Court 3. If I'm the organizers, I move Gasquet and Chela to Court 3 and bring the star attraction out for the crowd asap. lol

Julia said...

And now Chela and Gasquet have left the court. While Andreev and Fognini are indeed still playing...
Okay. So let's see how long this will take. And whether at some point they'll come up with a revised SOP.

John said...

Good idea, Tim. I guess we can watch futbol now.

Julia said...

Looks like they'll continue soon. They're preparing the court, now...

Tim said...

Man, getting Nalby to finally complete one official match is like getting a root canal. lol

This is unreal...yeah the other courts keep playing on. Maybe they want to be extra careful for the stars...

John, yea, the live links have switched to...you guessed it...more futbal

Jolcsi said...

Oh,no!!!
It is raining again.

Julia said...

The AutenticaTV one is showing Chela and Gasquet warming up.

Noubar said...

i think they r back warming up

Tim said...

Play resumes. Unfortunately, it is now 7-6, 3-3 15-15.

Noubar said...

hope chela will close this natch sooon

Tim said...

Chela breaks!!!! YESSS!!!

Istabraq said...

Do you people have a stream? I have Bet365 on, but if I click on the link that says David's match it says Streaming on this event has finished. I hope "finished" means "hasn't started"!!

Julia said...

The justin.tv ones (in the sidebar on the main page) work. :)

Jenny said...

Go to Fromsport, being shown there.

Julia said...

Yeah, those are the same justin.tv streams I've linked on VD. ;)

Julia said...

El Flaco has done it!

Noubar said...

ok David turn
Next

Tim said...

Chela finally wins the match. Phew!!!

Tim said...

I use this link nowadays. The streams are usually better than the ones on FromSport:

Two different links for Chela-Gasquet. Probably the same ones will appear under the Nalbandian match.

http://www.livescorehunter.com/Livescores/Livescore-Tennis.html

Istabraq said...

Okay, got Justintv now, thanks. What happened to Bet365 though? that was such a good picture last night. :-(

Julia said...

LiveScoreHunter and Fromsport usually just link to different justin.tv streams.

Istabraq, no idea what's wrong with Bet365. Or if they'll switch on the stream in time for the match... :(

Noubar said...

am hoping for a worst guality, so i will have a nice stream that works with my dsl, and u want a better picture lol
anywayz here we come, all set

Istabraq said...

Yes, livescorehunter just took me back to Bet365. Still getting Chela highlights at the mo on Justintv. Is that what the rest of you have?
I will wait and see, I suppose...

Julia said...

No, they're warmng up now.

Noubar said...

ty tim, the livescore hunter justin stream much better 4 me

Istabraq said...

Yes, have warm-up now. Pic not great, but ok. :-)

Tim said...

@Noubar Me too...on Livescorehunter. I like that you just get a pop-out box with no bells and whistles (i.e. ads) slowing things down. It just works better from there even if it is the same link. I've tested during matches and this is consistently true.

And it will give you more choices if there are some other streams available. It listed 6 links for the Rotterdam Final on Sunday, whereas FromSport just listed 2. I'd rather watch a match that is clear and streaming smoothly in a language I don't know than watch a match that keeps freezing during rallies.

Istabraq said...

That's weird. Why is the scoreboard on the screen "upside down" giving Starace's name first, when everything else has it in order according to the draw, that is, David first? It's a bit distracting. Italian tv stream? Even so... I've never seen that before.

Noubar said...

Serving much better 4 sure

Tim said...

Nalby holds, 2-1

Are those insects flying all around the place and getting in David's face, or is that poor screen quality?

Tim said...

I guess it is just wind and dirt. It looks like he is trying hard to keep stuff out of his eyes.

Noubar said...

Love service game, I like
cmmon break him Davido

Julia said...

Can someone please tell me what happened at break point? My stream crashed on me for a moment there...

Tim said...

Nice net shot!! 4-3.

Noubar said...

Ace julia, he served an ace

Julia said...

Thanks. :)

Noubar said...

1 game away

Noubar said...

lets pray everbody

Tim said...

Hopefully, Starace is playing much better today. He is really going for it on his second serves today I noticed. He knows that if he just puts it out there he is apt to lose the point. I don't think he was as prepared yesterday.

Noubar said...

once again, lets pray, 1 game away, eventhough i think nalbandian will win a TB

Tim said...

0-30. Praying. lol

Tim said...

YEsss! First time he put out a sloppy second serve and David pounced all over it. 5-2!!

Great forehand! 6-2!!

4 MPs!!1

Tim said...

VAMOS!!!!! Hard fought second set!

David is 1-0 for the year!

Gimeno-Traver next.

Andvari said...

I'm so glad he won! I missed the whole second set, but arrived just in time to watch the tiebreak. Vamos David!!!

Noubar said...

WOOOW
7 points in a row, now am happy it went to a TB, it was a test for his nerve, test passed, Positive
congrats every1

Tim said...

@Andvari you watched the best part by far.

If you have that effect often on David's play, make sure you watch the entire next match. lol

Unlike yesterday where there were 6 breaks of serve in 1 set, the second set didn't feature 1 break. David served really well today and played clutch at the end.

Krystle Lee said...

I didn't expect him to pull away from the tie-break that convincingly after the poor start. There was some good net play in there, good decision to keep points shorter that way.

I didn't see the first set so I don't know how Starace's performance compared. I thought in the first half, David looked to be in control of the rallies but then he got a little sluggish after that which contributed to the match becoming more of a struggle. I suppose that is something he will need to continuously contend with in the early stages of his comeback. Regardless it was nice to see David's groundstrokes and point construction again.

Krystle Lee said...

Forgot to mention that David made a couple of poor shot selections finishing off shots in the beginning that stopped him from converting. (Wish I could edit posts here...)

Julia said...

Yay! :D
He has really done it...
David is back.

In the post-match interview he talked about the conditions having been very difficult today (cold, wind). But he said he's feeling good and that he's happy to be back.

And yeah, Starace played and especially served a lot better than he did yesterday. But a great tiebreak indeed from David.

Tim said...

@Krystle Watch some of the highlights that were put up. Starace definitely was the beneficiary of the rain delay. He seemed like an entirely different player today and obviously had time to reflect on what he needed to do to stay in the match.

Starace looked like he was being steamrolled yesterday. I think he was caught by surprise and if the rain hadn't come yesterday, David would have won it much more easily. I was actually impressed by Starace's play today, and he served well when David had chances to break him.

Tim said...

Correct me if I'm wrong: I don't think David faced a break point on serve today.

Noubar said...

ur not wrong, he serve was outstanding, 2 of them love serves (correct me if am wrong Tim lol)and no BP.

Julia said...

No, I don't think he did. Starace wasn't the only one who served much better today.

Krystle, I agree about the weird shot selection at times. I think it's a typical sign for a lack of match practice.

John said...

That's right Tim. He never did face a break point. Very impressive performance. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Krystle Lee said...

I saw the little highlights they showed at the beginning of the match on the stream lol. It's not very helpful seeing winners without knowing how those rallies turned out that way. I also had a look at the YouTube video of the final game yesterday - I liked the forehand winner off the smash of course.

Tim said...

lol Noubar, I often put my foot in my mouth.

Julia and Krystle: the one I remember is him having a chance to get Strarace in a 15-40 hole as he approached the net I think in the 3-2 game; and Starace hit a shot right at him while he approached the net.

But instead of putting it away in the Ad court for the easy winner, he hit the ball right back at Starace. I thought he had more than enough time to react and take that point. But I may have to watch it again.

What ended up happening is Starace hit a winner on David's Deuce side while David stood flat footed at the net on the far left almost in disbelief he had set himself up so badly. That kind of thing happened today. Also, sometimes he seemed a little sluggish as compared to yesterday and didn't really finish off some points.

Benji said...

Did David plan his return to the tour with Pat Rafter? There was an awful amount of net-rushing going on today, and I thoroughly approve!

Anna said...

I'm sooo happy he's back, and of course, that he won.
He looks very well in terms of weight (he's body is bulk, he never will be like Chela, when he loses a lot of weight, often he has problems).
And even if today he didn't play that well as last night, his serve was really better (much better). also, don't know if you could watch it but the winds is a real problem here now (I have some little tree in my yard and we had to put some guide because of the wind this afternoon!) and the court was very different than last night more slow and heavier.
So, he was ansious in some points and has adjust some things, but he was against a player that likes to play on clay (and got better results on it) and he didn't look at all like a player who didn't play since 9 month and had two injuries. Don't know how he'll play tomorrow, if he wasn't very regular in the past, now it wil probably be worst because all the time out of the circuit, but HOW I MISSED HIM!!! See THAT'S WHY I LOVE TENNIS... I LOVE WATCHING PLAYERS THAT DON'T WANT HIT HARDER THAN EVERYONE, THAT BASE ALL IN FORCE (brute force very often)! I really missed someone thinking on the court!!!!! really the new generation, except very few exceptions, are really boring and way predictable
So, glad he's back

Julia said...

You could see that he was really trying to keep the points short(he also said it himself after the match). And maybe that's another reason he sometimes went for the wrong shot.
I also think that he seemed to run out of steam a bit towards the end of the set, which is why the tiebreak took me by surprise. I didn't really think he'd be able to take it up a notch. But he did.

And yeah, it's great to see him play again... :)

Noubar said...

Anna , i agree about the players of this new generation, well federer himself said that he enjoys playing with the players of his generation like Nalbandian ( i dought it lol)hewitt, and roddick.

Anna said...

Yes, he tried to keep it short. And it's logical because clay is not the best surface to play considering his past injury and not the favorite or best for David normally. And he looked calm, but in some points (specially break points in his favor) he wanted to win it and was agressive, more than it should be. I thinks that was because he had a lot time without playing.
The way he played the tie-break (except the first point) was great.
Let's hope tomorrow he'll play like last night but with today's serve (not that he played bad today, but last night was brillant specially in terms of receive)
