Copa Telmex Draw

Now this really is the official version, slightly different from the first version that was up on the tournament site. But for David, nothing has changed...

[1] David Ferrer (ESP) vs Simon Greul (GER)
Peter Luczak (AUS) vs Frederico Gil (POR)
Marcel Granollers (ESP) vs QUALIFIER
Fabio Fognini (ITA) vs [6] Igor Andreev (RUS)

[3] Nicolas Almagro (ESP) vs Daniel Gimeno-Traver (ESP)
Potito Starace (ITA) vs David Nalbandian (ARG)
Oscar Hernandez (ESP) vs QUALIFIER
Pablo Cuevas (URU) vs [5] Albert Montañes (ESP)

And it's also official now that David will play his comeback match against Italian clay courter Potito Starace. They've met twice so far. Both matches took place two years ago, both were played on clay. And both times it was David who prevailed in the end. Their last match (quarterfinal at Acapulco 2008) I was able to watch and there, David beat Starace fairly easily 6-3, 6-3. A week earlier in that year's Copa Telmex quarterfinal however, David had to come back from losing the first set and survive a second-set tiebreak before finally managing to seal his victory in the third, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. What a hard-fought and emotional match that must have been, you can catch a glimpse of in the YouTube clip below...

A look at Starace's stats for this year reveals that apart from reaching the quarterfinal at Sydney, he mostly didn't make it past the first round. Also at Santiago, on clay, last week (where he lost to Luczak). I haven't seen Starace play in quite a while now but I'd say he has a fairly strong serve for a clay courter and that much will depend on whether David finds a way of handling it. Apart from that, Starace really loves to play drop-shots. So David will have to be prepared to do some running - or find a way of keeping Starace too busy to play them.

All in all, I think this is a classic case of - it could've been better but it could've also been a lot worse for David. And for my part, I'm not going to think about what might come after this first match. Not yet...

So here's a look at David, winning his Copa Telmex 2008 match against Starace and then celebrating his victory with none other than Diego Maradona, who was there to support him. The quality isn't great (it was filmed from the stands) but it gives you an idea of the atmosphere at the BALTC - which will certainly be just as spectacular for David's comeback...

juiia, is there gona be streaming for the exho or the draw ceremony?

Julia said...

I don't think so. :(

Noubar said...

Live Scoring ???

Julia said...

You mean like with the RG draw? No. Live waiting...

Noubar said...

HAHAHAH no i meant live scoring for the exhibition ??

Julia said...

They're playing on the beach. In the sand. I don't think it'll be a real match. ;)
And I thought you meant the draw ceremony for Roland Garros, where you can follow what's happening online... I'd love something like that now...

Noubar said...

i read on goalz mag that the money will go to d nalbandian foundation, but i thought they where gna play on a real clay court,so thirs can never be a test 4 him lol

Julia said...

Okay, the ceremony itself should be over by now. Let's see how long it'll take them to put up the draw on the net...

Anna said...

Well, acording to the oficial site, the draw is up now (with some little crazu things, like under David's name a 6-3;6-3 result) But it's not the same that it looked earlier, so I think this is the draw:
David against Starace.
I'm trying to confirm this.

Julia said...

Yeah, just saw it. It always takes a moment to write it all down. ;)
I'll also look for some confirmation...

Anna said...

Still there's no news or articules about it. But, yes, seems his first match will be against Starace and then if he wins, (please!) he'll go against the winner of Gimeno-Traver/Almagro.
No news at the sports sites or tennis blog about it, but It is posted at the tournament page. Even if it was funny the things that draw said earlier... Sometimes it's better have the whole page ready and then updload it.

Julia said...

It's a bit strange that the draw is on the site but not in the official pdf version. And that it's also still not on the ATP website... I'll keep checking.

Julia am with you in the part of not even discussing who might nalby face after Starace (99% Almagro) but it's a real test now for him, i have seen Starace in plenty occasions, i remember once he played Murray, he is very talented with big serve and scary fast flat forehands, nothing mych in the backhand though.

Noubar said...

and it turned out he really got in with a 31 ranking (telmex website)not 64, maybe the 31 is the protected ranking somehow.

Julia said...

No, trust me. He got in with his ranking at the time, #64.

I'm just a bit shocked right now... I went over to justin.tv to have a look whether the channels showing TyC Sports (the station that will broadcast the Copa Telmex) are still there - and I can't access any of the Spanish-speaking channels anymore. A couple of other stream sites are gone, as well. Panic...

Julia said...

Though come to think of it, I believe that last year, there was a stream for the Copa Telmex on the betting sites. Gosh, I can only hope they'll show it.

Krystle Lee said...

Yes, last year the betting sites had streams of the first night match each day, I believe.

What happened with the exhibition match against Ferrer?

Istabraq said...

I have seen www.fromsport.com given on a forum as a link for the Copa Telmex, but I don't know how they know. I've used that before, but I think it just gives various links to the matches, and I've found some work, some don't.

When the matches start, if the links don't work I'll post on that forum and ask if anyone knows where to find one.

I was doing some zapping and I watched the end of the transmition for the Telmex's qualy.
I think David plays tomorrow at 19:30. BUT I COULDN'T HEARD VERY WELL, SO MAYBE I'M WRONG.
Of course I tried to check at the official telmex site and, of course, it doens't say still.
David said on an interview that he will be happy with getting to play two or three matches. Not even considering in winning nothing.
It could be worse, but still not the best debut.

Noubar said...

Thnx Anna , i like the positive attitude of David, I really hope he will win tomorrow, nut ya the telmex website is yet to show the order of play, and hopefully there will be a stream for the matches.

Julia said...

Anonymous, I don't know what happened with the show match. I haven't seen any pics or clips so far.

Bet365 will stream the night sessions again! Just saw it.
- And David will play his comeback match in the night session. Phew... :)
That's also important for sites like fromsport, atdhe.net and channelsurfing because they rely on the betting sites streams.

Julia said...

Yeah, Anna. 7.30pm is correct.

Noubar said...

thats good news, plus david doesnt like to play in heat.but any links to watch some qualifications now ?

Julia said...

Yeah, not a big surprise that David gets to play night session and also that he plays on Monday. The whole schedule seems tailored to his needs.

Don't think there's a stream for qualies, Noubar.

Istabraq said...

Good to hear. Bet365 usually works for me. :-)

Harry said...

Hi, I have a question about Bet 365. When I try to register it asks about the payment. Is that obligated to do to watch the streams and does that mean it costs money?

Julia said...

I think that nowadays Bet365 might require that you make a €10 (or thereabouts) deposit.

But their streams can usually also be watched for free on sites like fromsport etc. I'll know tomorrow whether these sites will have a stream for David's match. And I'll post any links I can find in the sidebar (under "Results & Schedule").

Julia here is a picture from the Nalbandian-Ferrer game, David looks really in a great shape

Thanks Julia for your information!

Perhaps this is a good omen. I just discovered Justin.tv has the Roddick-Verdasco final on live from San Jose right now. Apparently they had the Ferrero-Kubot final from Costo do Sauipe on earlier. Haven't been able to find out about their schedule for tomorrow. Let's hope.

Istabraq said...

Harry, you don't have to pay to watch live streaming on Bet365. When I registered it asked for my credit card details so I decided not to go ahead. Then I found they registered me anyway. I've been watching tennis on there ever since. A friend told me she had the same experience. I think that if you don't want to place any bets, payment doesn't come into it.

Hi guys! I arrived Buenos Aires yesterday at night... now that i have been one month out of Buenos Aires, I can't stand this hot and humidity weather... and so many mosquitous! Horrible!
People, tomorrow i will go to David's match, so, get sure that then you will be able to see pics :)

And, for the persons who were asking for photos of the exhibition against Ferrer, here I leave a link: http://www.copatelmex.com/galeriaALTA/index.php?sfpg=UGFycXVlIGRlIExvcyBOafFvcy8qKmMyMjYyMjA4ODc5MGVhYjQ1YjA0OGI4ZDlkNjU5MDBj

(Julia, if you post some of them in the main-page of the blog, remember to write that the pics were taken by "Copa Telmex/Sergio Llamera".)

Istabraq said...

Great photos - thanks Tamar. Yes, David looks in great shape.

Noubar said...

Thank u Tamar:
the pictures are awesome, and try to get along with the mosquitous, u might be there for a while lol, cant wait for the pics tomorrow

John said...

Julia, the TV schedule is now posted on the ATP Tennis website under Copa Telmex. Day and evening coverage on TyC Sports and Canal 7. I think those were the stations that streamed the San Juan exhibition. Hope this is correct.

Julia said...

Welcome back Tamar. :)
And thanks for the photos from Saturday. That's the press photo gallery for the Copa Telmex, right?

If you can watch Bet365 without making a deposit (as Istabraq said), I'd recommend registering at their site because their streams are reliable and of good quality. I registered at their site years ago and never had to pay anything.

John, by now I can access the Argentine streams on justin.tv again and I'll try to provide links for those (there are usually some that show TyC Sports). But Bet365 and the free sites using their footage offer far better quality.
