David out of the Australian Open

According to canchallena.com, the Fue Buena blog (thanks, leandro) and La Voz, David is definitely out of this year's Australian Open after a second MRI scan yesterday proved that he has suffered a 6-7mm tear in the abdominal area. He's bound to return to Argentina as soon as possible.

A second article on canchallena.com indicates that David made the decision to pull out of the year's first Grand Slam together with his team, the tournament physicians at Auckland and Dr. Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, who reviewed the scan images (which were sent to him) in Barcelona and advised David against trying to play in Melbourne.

While I can only speculate about the consequences this will have for David's state of mind, it now seems clear that he will make his ATP comeback at the Copa Telmex in Buenos Aires in mid-February.

Update
Throughout the last few days I kept looking for photos, videos, anything showing David in Auckland. And now, that he's probably already on his way back home to Argentina, I finally find this video of what looks like a small, more or less improvised press conference...

This is just a screencap, I can't embed the clip but you can watch it here.
A very happy and relaxed David (speaking English again after a long time), getting interviewed before that ominous training session and the injury...
It's really strange watching it now, knowing what happened afterwards. But I'll let you decide whether you want to see it or not.

That's bad news :( Although I was excited to finally see him play, he made a wise decision, I mean if it's that bad for sure he shouldn't play until he's 100% recovered. Hope things get better for him.

i am speechless , at least he should play another tournament before copa telmex, maybe in chili, anywayz Julia i have a question, with tthis withdrawal from Australia, does david lose one of his wildcards? i think he had 9 wildcards to chose any tournaments he wants, to enter the main draw, does this effect anything ???

Julia said...

Noubar, I think you mean his protected ranking. You're right, he'll have 9 chances to use it (used to be 8, this has been changed for this season). But David would've got into the AO main draw without needing his protected ranking. So no, his withdrawal won't have any effect. And for him to lose one of those 9 chances, he has to play the tournament he's using the protected ranking for.

I am so terribly sad for David, I cannot even *think* about ranking or anything to do with those types of technical things. I wish him the speediest recovery possible, both physically and emotionally, as this comeback trail injury has got to hurt him on a whole new level.

¸Hi. I am a mention trainer of a a European player. I am a big-big fan of King David. We are in Auckland. And we are very sad because David is was not here this Year. He wasn"t travelling here,so I think he got his injury in Argentina last week or earlier and this problem was the cause of he couldn"t travel to here. I will be believe that he come back soon "into the CIRCUIT" because everyboby will want to see him.

And about the protected ranking there's one more thing: he has 9 tournaments AND wimbledon. Because, and please tell me if I'm wrong, any champion or runner up was an invitation to participate for life. I remember Frana (who played the final of Wimbledon in doubles, losing that match) talking about that more than once. So, even if he goes down to the 150 or worse, he still has 0 points to defend, if he's ok, THAT HE WILL BE (let's be possitive) he has his place in all the GS and MS plus some Wild card, and also if the Wimbledon thing is ok, one more tournament to choose.(not even speculating with a WC for the MS of Shangai if he doesn't have the ranking for that time, because if the best surface for him and he won there the MC)

Yeah, it sucks what happened, and he looked really happy about playing, but on the bright side, if he was entusiastic, imagine now. Also probably a little pissed off, wich always made David play better (ask Hemann or Hewitt or even Del Potro!).
So the best for him, and I hope he gets well soon.

By the way, thanks Julia for all the work trying to find pictures or videos. I didn't watch it because he seems really happy there and knowing how all ended, I'm not sure I'll watch it in the near time. But, thanks a lot!
Also, he looked really well in that screencap.

Anna said...

Sorry, every champion or former runner up HAS an invitation, I meant...

Julia said...

Jolcsi, David was in Auckland, though not for as long as we all hoped he would be...
Noubar, you're welcome.
You too, Anna. About Wimbledon, they may do things differently there in terms of the seeding but there's no such thing as a guaranteed entry for former runner-ups. I think as a former champion you get life-long free access to the tournament site. But that's it, as far as I know.
And Shanghai is a normal Masters event now. What used to be the Masters Cup is now the World Tour Final in London. ;)

Anna said...

Yes, I know Shangai is a normal MS now, but, the people behind is the same that at the MC. They still talk about that final between David and Federer and also they tried like crazy to have Nalbandian when he won the 2 MS in 07 (even as alternate, they want him there because what he did before), plus that's David's surface, it's not crazy think that a WC could be more than possible.
And about Wimbledon, I think but I'm not sure, that all the players who reached the finals (doubles or singles, male and female) have an invitation for life if they want to use it. You know wimbledon is very peculiar about its rules, and I don't know if that is at the tournament rule or just something not written (as because of that depends of the organization), but I do remember Frana talking about that (he was making a point about how different was reching a final on Wimbledon than in other Slam).
But even if I heard about it more than once I'm not sure about it, like I said.

Anna said...

But the most important thing now is David ok. I hope he's not too sad or down about it. Like I said, I'm not warry about the ranking, because if he comes back like he looked he was going to do; and with nothing to lose and garantee access to the important tournaments due to the RP, he'll be ok.
Right now I only want him to be ok...

Julia said...

Anna, then I must have misunderstood what you were saying. :)
Anyway, for Shanghai, he'll either have to rely on a wildcard or hope that his ranking will be good enough again by then to get into the main draw.
I just checked the protected ranking rules again and there it says, 9 uses or expiry after 9 months, starting from the date of the first tennis event played, including exhos. This would mean that David's protected ranking will expire by mid-September, 9 months after San Juan. Even if he hasn't used it 9 times by then...
Wimbledon is special in various ways, for example the seeding. But they don't have special entry rules for former runner-ups. Or champions, for that matter.

i am here in Auckland but for a week but David wasn"t here in this week.
I am with Ferrero but weare so bad because his good friend not was here...
But we will see to him again /for a long time/.

Julia said...

Jolcsi, he was seen, photographed, filmed and interviewed in Auckland...

From watching the video and the few pictures I've seen of David at Auckland, he looks to be in great condition compared to the December exhos. Has it crossed anyone else's mind that perhaps he worked out a little too hard in that time period between the exhos in Argentina and the tourney in Auckland and that resulted in the injury?

Tim said...

By the way, Julia, keep the link for that video up. That is a great interview regardless of the timing, and it is fun hearing him speaking in English again. :)

Noubar said...

Jolsci, u made me laugh like hell, u might be missing something there lol. the guy was in Auckland

Tim: I didn't watch the video yet. But I saw the pictures and also I remember the comments when Tamar posted her videos and photos from the Peugeot Press Conference.
There's the thing, that I notice a lot with David: he often looks way thinner with his "normal" clothes or with the trainnig outfits. Tamar's comments were about way fit he looked, etc. It's not that I could look at him in person, but that's a thing that I heard more than often. In that screencap, his face looked thiner or less chubby, but also, in pictures from the Peugeot, he looked like that too. And with the blank shirt he looked thinner than with the blue one with those things in silver.
In that picture we can see his back and his sides (when he was heavier, he didn't have that shape) but there are pcitures of him at the Peugeot where he looked like that (about his sides, I mean).
To me is a mistery. I know the Yonex is not the best in terms of how well their clothes fits, and the only one that uses that brand, that I remember now, is Hewitt (who's a stick walking).
But, yeah, It's more than possible if he changed that much as you and the others said, all the work could cause the injury. It's not something weird, it happens often with players after their pre-season trainning. Always in Australia there're a lot of players injured because is the first tournament for them, or they couldn't recover from the one they played before and they don't resist the Slam.
Well, I just hope he'll be ok soon.
He really wanted to start playing again. He looked really happy.
VAmos David!!!!!!

Kohlchriber:" I was Happy when i new that I will not play nalbandian in the first round, He's a great player and it would have been a very difficult match to win"

Istabraq said...

I'm sure Kohli didn't mean that he was happy David is injured, though. ;-)

Yes, it seems David may have overdone the training a bit, unfortunately. What a shame, when he has been saying all along that he is going to be careful and ease himself back into playing. But I guess it's easily done.

Tim said...

Anna, Noubar and Istabraq:

I would rather David be injured as a result of his desire and determination and hard work to get back to tennis, then have it be the other way around. Although I am sad this happenened, your thoughts have confirmed my wishes that David is comitting himself to this return with full heart and determination. That makes me feel happy! :)

I don't want to jump the gun here. But I love to feel hope. :)

Thanks!

Noubar,
Of course not. Kohli recognizes how good a player David is.

Noubar said...

david's official site says the injury is to take 20 days to heel, but they say if it doesnt, he will make the 2nd (lol) comeback in Indian wells.
PS: why the hell did they move the English section on his website.

You're too fast, Noubar.
I'm writing the new post just now... ;)
