Back on the Recovery Trail...

(Sebastian Salguero/MundoD - from a previous interview)

With David safely back home by now, the latest news item on his official site says (I can't link to specific articles anymore, now that the site has been relaunched) that he will probably need around twenty days to recover from the abdominal tear he suffered in Auckland. Adding that if "nothing unforeseeable happens, David's official comeback could take place at the Copa Telmex". Not "will" but "could".
Which sounds a bit vague for my taste...

In any case, this means that if all goes well, David will play his comeback tournament in front of a home crowd, at the BALTC - the same venue where he won the Copa Argentina exhibition, less than a month ago. But as fitting as it may seem for David to also have his official comeback in Argentina, it is now clear that the Copa Telmex and Acapulco, a week later, will be the only opportunities David will have to gain match practice ahead of the Davis Cup tie against Sweden. So maybe it's not surprising that the first questions have been raised by the Argentine press (for example in this article I already used for the last post), asking whether Tito Vázquez should really rely on David. After all, he could end up having played only two matches before Stockholm...

But first of all, it's now back to hoping that David will have a speedy recovery.
Without anything unforeseeable happening.

So, if he can't play in Bs As He won't go to Mexico? I think it's due to the change of surfaces: there's no sense playing on clay one tournament if you're going to have to play 2 MS 1000 on hard. David said the changes of surfaces was a thing he was going to try to avoid. The only thing is that Acapulco gives 500 points.

About the Davis: If he can't play the Telmex (and Acapulco) because his injury and Vazquez calls him (specially since the chances of the other one for not playing are bigger now, at least according to the rumors), I'm going to hit David really hard if he even thinks about playing. I'm sorry but if there's something worst that coming back on a Slam it's coming back for a Davis tie! 5 sets and all the pressure?! And worst knowing that David can go and do what he did against Soderling that day? No, no, no... Knowing how involved David is?! No way! I'll go and I'll chain him to a chair so he can't move! He already made more than enough for the argentine team. Call Del Potro and make him play (use a gun if it's necesary, don't care), but let David alone because the stress of those matches is the last thing he needs on a comeback. With no matches before? I don't care what Vazquez could think (because Vazquez's mind is a scary thing) but I hope someone can make David see that it's the worst for him. As an argentine person, I don't want David playing if that's the situation. Not for the team, but for David's health

Sorry for the rant, but I read enough of speculations about David making his comeback on that tie. That gives me nightmares!

I hope he can play in BsAs and Acapulco. He'll need the points

For the record: I haven't seen anything on the official that suggests he'd skip Acapulco and go directly to IW.

Anna, he's surely not going make his comeback in Stockholm. I think that even if he plays the Copa Telmex and Acapulco, it's still not certain he'll get to play DC.

Just read where Delpo pulled out of Kooyong with a wrist injury. No word yet on whether he'll miss the AO. Not good for Argentina. I hope the 20 days recovery for David is the conservative time frame. If it is he's got a little cushion since Buenos Aires is 30 days away. Damn, Auckland was such a good tournament for him to play in. Even with Kohlschreiber first.

John, I don't know if it's true, but over on MTF there are some people saying they've seen Delpo on the practice courts at Melbourne Park.

P.S. It's true. There are also new photos that show Delpo training in Melbourne.

Thanks for the info, Julia. On an update, Delpo's doctor said he doesn't think the injury is serious. Of course the doctor isn't in Australia yet. Still, who would want to play Jo-Willie if you had a sore wrist?

Poor David, if Tito don't select him for DC, he'll be disappointed but I would understand Tito's decision. David hasn't played on hard court for ages...the essential thing for him is to recover and have a training as soon as possible. Maybe he's authorized to swim ? Or do some bicycle ?? Get well soon Nalby, we all love you

tito should pick nalbandian no matter what. even if he doesnt play singles, he's probably our best doubles player and backup player.

who else would play?
monaco is pathetic on hardcourts and has failed to make any impact in davis cup matches, same goes for machi gonzalez.

acasuso, too old, always ends up losing.
chela and calleri are retiring soon.

the only possible alternatives are zeballos and mayer, although zeballos has only played 2 ATP matches in his career.

schwank is a good player, if he gets his act together, he can reach top 20-10.

exactly, if nalbandian plays his 30% , he is much better than the players u mentioned before, no one is passionate as much as nalby, but still its to much pressure for a comeback.

Noubar, thanks. :)
Anonymous, yeah, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have David on the team. Just not for playing singles...
True, Monaco hasn't done too well in DC so far, especially on hard courts. Zeballos has played ten ATP matches and had a good run at St. Petersburg last year but my suggestion would be Mayer. Based on what I've seen from him last season. He seems able to play well on all surfaces and that's really important for DC, also in the long run.
I like Schwank myself but right now, it doesn't really look like he's getting his act together...

hehe long time ago lol
David drops to # 130 on ATP ranking, a lot of job yet to done

Julia said...

Leandro, yeah, but the one thing they seem to have forgotten is an English version...
Noubar, yep, #130 now. For the moment. He'll lose a couple more places after the AO. And then it'll depend on how well he does at the Copa Telmex (if he's able to play)...
