Last Day of the Copa Argentina - and David's Season

(Prensa Copa Argentina - from the Gaudio match)

Today, David will play his last match of this season...
But the question is whether this last match will be the one against Gaudio, due to start shortly, or the final against Monaco or Baghdatis tonight.

Update
There is a stream after all from ESPN+: http://horaciotv.ucoz.com/index/0-5
(Thank you, to the one who posted it, I can't reproduce your username with my keyboard here. ;)

Update II
David has lost his second round-robin match against Gaston Gaudio, who prevailed 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Coming back from a double-break down at 0-4 in the second, David still managed to win that set and take the match into a third - which in the end proved to be a lot more important than its actual outcome...
Because it means that regardless of this defeat, David is through to tonight's final, thanks to having the best 'sets won/lost' ratio in his group:
David: 3-2
Gaudio: 3-3
Moya: 2-3

A video of the match against Gaudio, starting at 6-3, 2-0, can be downloaded here (thanks, Andvari):
www.megaupload.com/?d=JO8ZKYVY

So David's last match of this season will be the final of the Copa Argentina.
He'll face either Juan Monaco or Marcos Baghdatis. (Who still have to play their match.)
The final starts at 8pm local (+3 hrs GMT, -2 hrs EST).

oh damn.... i wish there was a live stream.

Thanks for the update, Julia. I was just looking for a stream (with no luck, obviously). It's a shame, I was looking forward to watching the next match.

Krystle Lee said...

Thanks for the update. I was curious to know whether it was even broadcasted on TV. This will at least save me from staying up to see whether there will be a live stream.

Julia said...

Only the final, which will take place as scheduled... I should've known from the start, i.e. when play was cancelled yesterday.

Denise said...

There's a live score (better than nothing) here, hope the link works:

http://www.cooperativa.cl/prontus_nots/site/artic/20091219/pags/20091219155703.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ultimominuto+%28Cooperativa.cl+-+Todas+las+noticias%29&utm_content=Twitter#

If not, you can find it via Twitter (searching for Nalbandian Gaudio).

Julia said...

Yeah, there's also a scoreboard for it on Bet365, just posted it. :)

Julia said...

And they start with 3 breaks in a row... *2-1 David.

Noubar said...

is it gaudio playing better, or nalbandian playing worse !!

Tim said...

Wow, 4 breaks in a row, and Gaudio struggled to finally hold serve in the 5th game as I saw it at Deuce. Strange match!

Julia said...

David can't be serving too well, as he hasn't managed to hold serve yet...

hayrabet said...

2-5 :(, i hope he isin't injured ord something

れいこ said...

Hi, this is my first post.

The streaming:

THANKK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hayrabet said...

thanks!

Tim said...

@れいこ

Legendary first post!! :)

Thanks so much!!!

Istabraq said...

Oh, briliant, thanks for the live stream. I can get that. I couldn't find live scores on bet365, except for other sports. (I can watch Benneteau v Clement live on bet365though!)

Istabraq said...

れいこ, you are a star. :-)

Noubar said...

cant believe this, we need a comeback now !!!!!

Noubar said...

horrible serve, broke again

Istabraq said...

Don't quite know what happened there, but it had your name on it, Santa Julia. ;-)

Tim said...

How windy is out there? Man, he can't hit a clean shot! :{

Julia said...

It's apparently extremely hot. The commentators keep going on about the heat. (Which is also why that Santa Julia bottle exploded... ;)

Noubar said...

if nalby loses now? is he out ?
cuz the 3 in the group will have 1 win

Tiffany said...

If David loses, he is out. The winner advances to the final.

Tim said...

@Julia

Too creepy and symbolic with that bottle bursting. lol

Oh well, we know what his kryptonite at the moment is. David has not ever, even in his early days, looked happy or comfortable when it is hot.

Tim said...

Yea, he won a game. ;)

Noubar said...

thank u god
pls david

Noubar said...

3 games in a row, little comfidence people

Tim said...

One break back, and David just consolidate it via his serve to make it 3-4 instead of 0-4

He is just gutting it out right now. It is unreal how many shots were flying long there for awhile. That is why I thought it might be windy.

Noubar said...

VAMOOOOOOOOOOS
4-4

Tim said...

Wow!!! Back on serve at 4-4. Gaudio's shots are sailing long now! Bizare match!

Fans are getting happier.

15-15, David on serve.

Noubar said...

5-4 , ends it with n ace,
hope he will do wut he did with berdych

Tim said...

AAAAAAAAAAAACE!! :-D

5-4 David! 5 games in a row.

Tim said...

Do you miss the roller coaster tennis of Mr. Drama King, Julia? lol

He looks like a completely different player right now than he did at 0-4. Something finally clicked in.

6-5 in 2nd set, David is up, on serve.

Noubar said...

one game away, no tiebreaks plss

Anonymous said...

YESSS!!!!! Second set!!

Noubar said...

2nd set goes to Nalbandian, what a comeback.0-4 > 7-5

Anonymous said...

Great David!!! We go in a third set!

Julia said...

Tim, yeah, I really missed it... And he simply is The King of Drama. :)

Tim said...

VAMOS!!! He looks like focused Dave again! He wins the second set 7-5 winning 7 of the last 8 games.

Athena, my kitty, came to join me watch David during the last service game, so I knew something good was going to happen. :)

Noubar said...

explain me , y the winner advances to the final.
gaudio lost to moya
nalby won moya

Joop said...

nice start in the third set

Noubar said...

2-1 lookin good, btw wut a nice shot to end a serving game

Tim said...

Nice game! 2-1 on serve. He looks good right now. Athena, kitty in my pic, is watching match and cheering David on. She has been good luck although makes it hard to type. :)

@Noubar, they would go by sets and then games if all three are tied, right? This is a round robin

Noubar said...

he is tired, broken again

Tim said...

Beautiful drop-shot and passing shot combo there on that one point during 2-3 game. Gaudio has picked up a notch too.

But yeah, Gaudio up a break, 6-3, 5-7, 4-3.

Noubar said...

last chance, he needs 2 break here, plss

Noubar said...

Game Over

joop said...

so gaudio wins now and is it now like this?
nalbandian:3-2
gaudio: 3-2
moya: 2-3

and in games:
nalbandian: 26-20 56,5%
gaudio: 41-27 60,2%

Tim said...

Well, that turned into a good match at the end, also sad about the end result. :(

I'm glad David made a match of it and fought to the end. He played really well at times and at other times really had some bad mishits.

Julia said...

Joop, the commentators just said that David is through to the final because while each player in the group won and lost a match, he won his match in straights.

Joop said...

ok thanks julia! glad he's through! i was afraid they used the stes/games system.

Noubar said...

i knew it julia
i asked 4 an explanation there, but i knew it, thnx god he took the set

Julia said...

It's what they said, I can't guarantee you that they're right, though. Have to find further confirmation...

Tim said...

Yea, Gaudio would be 3-3 in sets, not 3-2. He lost in 3 sets to Moya, right?

David would be 3-2 in sets.

Noubar said...

but logic says, he must play the final, its like the masters cup system, but pls confirm us julia.

joop said...

haha, i see now that my calculation was wrong. long time since i had math

lol

Ciccio(NY) said...

Joop; Gaudio is 3-3 in sets. That's why David is through to the final

Noubar said...

http://www.goalzz.com/main.aspx?c=4993
julia, can this be a confirmation ???

Julia said...

Yeah, I guess together with the comments and explanations from the ESPN guys - that makes it official.

We'll get to see David in the final again tonight. :)

Tim said...

Noubar, yes it can. He is listed as the finlist. VAMOS!! He just had to win that second set to make it!

All logic says he is through too. They go by match record first, set record second, and game record third for tiebreakers:

David, 1-1, 3-2
Gaston 1-1, 3-3

Not necessary to check games.

Cool!! I hope he recovers well. That was a tough match! He really gets test today. I am heartened that despite the loss, from 0-4 in the second set, he mostly looked good. The ball was really sailing on him for awhile there.

Noubar said...

yaaay
hope nalbandian wasn't giving his best today, cuz he knew he had to play again, plus he doesnt like heat lol
so the final will be colder lol, i think with monaco, we dont want a win, we just want a better game, a better match.

Ciccio(NY) said...

Well, that is more the David we had been expecting. Inconsistent, with moments of good tennis showing his talent, but also with trivial mistakes. But I also think that Gaudio played an important role in the development of the match. Gaudio is also very talented, but even more cyclotimic than most of the players in the circuit. When Gaston was in his way through to win 63/62 he committed 2DFs serving 4-1 and then everything went down. David knowing this, dropped his UFE and got the second set, but his game, and movements to the sides were not enough to get the match. His drive worked in gusts but not as reliable as last week. His backhand needs still rithm as serving and he should loose 5-6 more pounds...A lot to work on until January. And now he has to play the final match today in a few hours. It's going to be very though physically for him. I expect to be moved from side to side and expose his lack of timing. But we will see.

Tim said...

One thing not good today. 14 winners and 36 unforced errors. Yuch! His first service percentage was actually really decent at 70%.

http://i49.tinypic.com/eb3mma.jpg

Gonzo got wiped by Baggy and Pico. That is really surprising. Those two both head into their match 2-0 in sets, so the winner of that match will go on regardless.

Ciccio(NY) said...

When David got the second set from 0-4 made me remember that match with Berdych in Madrid '07 that being set down and 0-4 in the second set marked the reborn and went through winning Madrid and Paris M.S. in one of the most notable display of tennis I ever seen.
Let me mention that for David it has always been challenging to play in open courts. This surface is intermediate speed and not indoors as last week in San Juan. As we all know, David excells in indoor tennis. But also let's give some credit to Gaudio. He is very talented. His problems lie in the mental game, but in RG 2004, when both, Gaudio and David were in it tenistic plenitude, Gaudio won. So, chapeau for the 'gato' in his final games of his professional career.

Noubar said...

1 more thing, hope baghdatis wins, so David will be the only Argentine in the final, 100% will support him none less.
and yes, that counts lol

Tim said...

@Noubar, yea he would have to be motivated to win one set going into the match today if he wanted to make the finals. So Gaudio lost his opportunity to make the final in the second set. I didn't think there was much separation between the two in the third set. David served one loose game and that was it. Also, Noubar, I agree about the "heat" affecting David. If you watched him when he was 21 or 22, like the Australian Open in 2003, he easily gets very hot compared to his opponents and has to fight that kind of thing off. Temperate conditions favor his game.

@Ciccio, yes, he looked downright awful from the end of the first set (never saw first half of set) to 0-4 in second. I agree that for awhile he was just gutting it out and waiting for Gaudio errors to get back to 3-4. After that, and until the end, I thought he played well and I thought Gaudio fought hard too. Yes, his movement from side to side and timing was not great at times. Some of his mis-hits we're discouraging. But compared to how he had been playing, he really picked it up.

Tim said...

@Ciccio I was impressed by Gaudio today too. I thought he had a lapse to let David back into it, but David played well from 3-4 to take the second set. Gaudio fought hard to make it 5-5. And then he was just "too good" as they say at many key points in the third set. He is tough.

I know the match your referencing in 2004. Gaudio fans always mention that one to me. ;) lol

kudos to El Gato

@Noubar Baggy has been tough lately. He won the Stockholm Open title at the end of October when Robin had to withdraw due to tennis elbow in the semis. So I didn't get to see those two match up, but he was solid in getting that title. Yes, David will have the crowd behind him, but Baggy is in-form right now, so we will really get an idea of where David is at tonight.

Noubar said...

tim add me on facebook
Noubar Semerjian
we should be in touch more often

Tim said...

I will defintely do so, Noubar. I am Timothy Ahrens. I really enjoyed watching and chatting with you during the match today. We see the same things as fans quite a bit. lol

I am "Sodal" at the Mens Tennis Forum (Nalby and Soderling fan). I was "Owl Justice" at Nalby's old website davidnalbandian.com from 2006 and still "King David" at Tennis.com although I haven't posted in a long time there.

Noubar said...

lovely
small difference
am a Nalbandian and a federer fan lol

Tim said...

I'm Owljustice on twitter too. That's usually my nick. Most Nalby fans like his intelligent game. :)

Noubar said...

there are 2 profiles on facebook with ur name? which 1

Tim said...

I like Fed too, Noubar. I'd probably even like him more if he didn't win all the time. lol But he and Nalby definitely are a joy to watch because of their high tennis iqs and natural abilities to do everything well. I do rf.com, and also Rafa and Nole forums. I just like good tennis, you know? lol

Julia said...

Tim, thanks for the stats. Though once again, I'm having my doubts about that first serve percentage... lol

Tim said...

@Noubar mail me at tim_ahrens@techie.com and I'll give you the details.

Tim said...

Julia, I know what you mean. Why was I getting mad at him for missing first serves all the time if he was serving at 70%? It makes one think he must have been serving up a storm when Gaudio broke him 4 times in the first set. lol

Ciccio(NY) said...

Baghdatis in the final? Well, let's be careful what we wish for. Can be too tough for today's David. [Although 'Pico' Monaco too.]
And in remembering matches, the SF of AO 2006, when Marcos come back from two sets down to get David was an historic moment in David career. This was the time, when Roger Federer, said he was waiting for David in the final of the AO to fight for the ATP no. 1. David had taken Roger in the M.S. final in Shangai, and was beating badly Baghdatis in the first too games, Marcos then loosen up and David slowly runned out of gas. Had David taken this match, the ATP landscape those years could have had a completely different appeareance...

hayrabet said...

Whats up with David's official site?

Andvari said...

I uploaded the match again for anybody who is interested:

The video starts at 6-3 2-0 Gaudio

Julia said...

Thank you, Andvari. :)
I'll include the link with the post.

Julia said...

Hayrabet, yeah, it's been down for several days now. Maybe they're making a new version of it, or something.

Tim said...

@Ciccio the rollercoaster life of being a Nalby fan. :) Yea, there are a few matches that are downright painful to remember. That one against Baggy is one of them. You could mention the SF against Roddick at the U.S. Open in 2003 too to make me really start crying. lol

Baggy is in-form right now, no doubt. He just won the Stockholm Open and killed Gonzo 6-2, 6-2. Forgetting the past, we will get to see David tonight against one of the most talented players in the game when they are on. Nalby has already delivered much more than I could imagine thus far in his comeback from surgery. I would not make him the favorite tonight. I just want to see some good tennis.

Ciccio(NY) said...

BTW, it's not that hot in Buenos Aires as it could be: ~28 C. It could be ten more degrees in December. And humidity is 'only' 60%. Again, it could be much higher! Even above saturation .100%! I guess, after yesterday's storm, weather cooled down a bit. AO can be much worse!

Tim said...

Thanks, Andvari! Cool!! :)

Julia said...

Ciccio, I don't know how hot it really is, it's just that the commentators were talking about the heat. And after all, it was enough to make that bottle explode... ;)

Ciccio(NY) said...

Baghdatis took the first set 76(6) over Monaco, although seems to have some physical problems on the left side of his back...
LOL the champgane bottle exploding!
True, it's pretty sunny in BA now, but the air temperature during David's match was 26-27 C. Should not have been a big issue.

Julia said...

I'd prefer Monaco, to be honest. David has had enough problems with Baghdatis in the past, and not only at that infamous AO semi.
But most of all, I want a long, tiring three-set match between these two... lol

Ciccio(NY) said...

Well, we must acknowledge that Baghdatis is another very talented player, and that after the AO final he neither delivered as much as one would have expected. Sounds familiar?
PS: The match with Roddick was the one with the misscall, right?

Tim said...

Pico looks sharp too, Julia. They may very well exhaust each other. And they won't have much time to recover. :) This looks good for David! hahaha

This is a really good match just for the great tennis. 7-6, 1-2 Baggy is leading, but Pico just served at love and I get the feeling he isn't going away without a fight. He looks really good. C'mon Pico, win the 2nd set 6-4 or 7-5, and let's go to a third set tiebreaker! ;)

Tim said...

@Ciccio

I acknowledge that Baggy is another very good player! lol

Julia, a new record for # of comments here. :)

Julia said...

Ciccio, I'm no Baghdatis expert but he seems to have been constantly troubled by injuries for the last two years or so.

And yep, that was the Roddick USO semi.

Tim, I'm not really watching the match, just taking a look now and then, but it's definitely a different level of tennis... So yeah, we can only hope they'll play three sets. And Pico never goes away without a fight. :)

Julia said...

Tim, yeah. A new record. :)

Though maybe I should make a new post for the final. I think it's getting a bit much with all the scrolling... lol

Noubar said...

heheh i didnt think about that, me 2 julia, i want a tiring 3 set match, hopefully 2nd and a 3rd set tiebreaker lool

Andvari said...

It looks like its gonna be two sets unfortunately..

Noubar said...

dont say it lol

Tim said...

Great match! Deuce at 5-4. Pico is a fighter!

Tim said...

Pico breaks and saves a match point!!!! 5-5 now in 2nd set. I love it!!!! ;)

Andvari said...

indeed Tim, great effort from Monaco by breaking back

Tim said...

Baghdatis won 7-6, 7-5

Baggy looks completely in-form. And like I said, he recently won the Stockholm Open title. He is back. This will be fun tonight because if David plays well, we will know he is ready. Even if he doesn't play well, Baggy is playing top notch tennis right now. Pico was already playing top 20 to top 30 level coming in. So cool! This will be a great test and maybe a really fun match. :)

Ciccio(NY) said...

And the latest heartbreaking missed opportunity by David was again, in the AO2008, when, after the MS of Madrid and Paris missed by one spot the MS finals in China (everybody expected him to win it if qualified).
And they showed up to the AO with 12 extra pounds. It was even the subject of mocking at cable TV by Brad Gilbert who suggested David should have on his shirt 'donuts' as sponsor. Sad.

Noubar said...

Nalby vs Baggy 8:30 local
c u then
peace all

Tim said...

Andvari you posted the 100th comment on this thread. Congrats! lol

Andvari said...

haha thanks, lol

Julia said...

A new record, indeed. :)
But I'll still make a new post for the final now...

Tim said...

@Ciccio

I think Gilbert's exact words were "Dunkin' Donuts as a sponsor". lol Thanks for sharing! ;)
