Copa Argentina starts for David tonight

David plays his first match at this year's Copa Argentina tonight. He'll face Spain's Carlos Moya, who, just like David, is currently on the comeback trail after having been sidelined with a serious hip injury since February.
Last night, Moya defeated Gaston Gaudio 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in what was the first match of David's group (while Monaco beat Gonzalez 7-5, 6-4 in the second group).

Update
In a in parts highly entertaining match David beat Carlos Moya 6-2, 6-4.
David immediately broke Moya's serve for a 2-0 lead and then again when Moya was serving to stay in the set at 5-2.
The second set not only saw some very entertaining rallies but also the first time David went down a break since his comeback, gifting it to Moya with double fault. Moya, however, promptly returned the favour to level the score at 3-3. Eventually, David managed to get the decisive break when Moya was serving to stay in the match.

While David's forehand was once again impressive (just like in San Juan), he was struggling with his serve, especially in the second set. But overall, it was another great performance from David, given the circumstances. And it was definitely a different atmosphere than it was in San Juan. More of a test...

UPDATE II
It now says on the Copa Argentina site that David's match against Gaudio will not take place at around 10.30pm as the second match of the night but at
8.30pm local (+3 hrs GMT, -2 hrs EST).

Julia, if we do have any live stream problems for the match, I understand some Pico fans used this link last night to keep abreast of the score. Hopefully, we won't have to use it, but it is better than being in the dark:

Julia,

This looks like a good back-up plan to your link:

http://www.justin.tv/tenisarg

It is on and it is titled "Tenis Copa Argentina"

It looks like Desportes.

Tim said...

It's showing Nalby being interviewed now. That is a really good sign. lol

hayrabet said...

fenixtvc is also interviewing nalbandian. but thanks for the other sites as a back-up plan :P

Tim said...

@hayrabet

Is that off the "Tenis" link? When I click on that it just goes on for minutes without picking up any stream.

Anyway, if anyone else has the problems I have with the first link, try this:

http://www.justin.tv/tenisarg

It's on now! :)

Julia said...

Yeah, good back-up plan. :)
But fenixtvc is working for me. Hooray!
And now that they're showing that interview video again, I wrote down what he says in a comment for the previous post, hayrabet. ;)

hayrabet said...

tim, i havent got any problems at all. I usually have problems witj the justin.tv streams :P

hayrabet said...

Tim said...

Julia Hayrabet, both links are working for me now. :)

Julia said...

I just put up both links on the front page, i.e. in today's post. To be on the safe side.

Julia said...

Definitely a different welcome than the one he got last year...
His wrist is taped. Hope it's just a precaution.

hayrabet said...

julia are you sure its taped? It looks more like a extra-large wristband

Julia said...

Under that wristband. You could see it when he came on court.

hayrabet said...

he looks so large in that t-shirt :P

The picture quality is definitely worse on Fenix today.

Nalby breaks! 2-0. He should take time off more often. lol

Noubar said...

His Forehand id HUGE , i am shocked

hayrabet said...

i've noticed that too noubar

Tim said...

@Krystle Lee

I agree. The San Juan stream was better than normal tennis streams imho.

hayrabet said...

santa julia, its refers to you julia

Julia said...

Damn, I must've missed that... lol

hayrabet said...

he's playing very good im impressed, that forehand is killing.

Tim said...

Forehand looks awesome! :)

Nalby takes the first set 6-2 with two breaks of serve and serves to start the second set. :)

hayrabet said...

he serves well too , hands down

Noubar said...

wow, a still amused by his forehand shots, very powerful and deep, go on david, crash him

Anonymous said...

wow what a point!

Tim said...

@Anonymous on that point

Backhand looks pretty good too! ;)

Tim said...

Crowd is standing!! Wow, can he play all-court or what?!! :)

Nalby smiling...nice to see...

Istabraq said...

I missed that point! My stream chose that moment to start freezing. I heard the applause, and saw David give a little smirk...

Ooh! now THAT point I did see. The smairk was a full-on grin that time. :-)

another very entertaining rally!

joop said...

some nice volleying there too from nalbandian in this match

Quick observations:

-Nalby is being tested by Moya much more than Gaudio or Massu last week. Moya looks pretty sharp, especially in the 2nd set.

-He needs to get more first serves in. This has always been an issue.

-Nalby looks a little tired now that he has a fight on his hands.

-Love how agressively he is playing though.

YEAAAA!!!! 6-2, 6-4

Great performance against a player that looked pretty good too! :)

News for opponents. Get that first serve in or Nalby is going to nail you on your second one! :)

Istabraq said...

What a return at 30 all! :-)

Julia said...

Tim, I agree, this has been more of a test than his matches in San Juan.
And he did seem pretty tired afterwards...
But at least he said that he didn't feel any pain during the match, so that's good.
And it's also good that he passed his first bigger test, going down a break in the second set, with flying colours.
As for the serve... Well, looks like he's back to normal...

Noubar said...

C'mon
He did it again, i agree Moya is a better test than massu or gaudio, and he past that test easily.
cant wait for 2morrow, am gonna say it again, the guyz forehand is much stronger than before, no question about that, and nice backhand down the line there, i remembered the old dayz
vamooooooooos

@Julia

Well, they showed him having a 59% first serve percentage. So that is better than I thought it was. Maybe he was serving at a really high percentage in the first set when he seemed to have no adversity at all, and I just noticed it in the second set when he started struggling.

I took a screenshot when they showed the stats at the end. You can see how blurry my stream was, so not worth taking a photo, but at least got the final stats shot:

Julia said...

Thanks, Tim. :)
The stats already said 59% after the first set and for that one it might be true. But as far as I'm concerned, there's just no way he had 59% for the whole match...

Istabraq said...

Yes, I thought they were only showing the stats for the first set, even at the end.

Julia said...

But the rest was different, i.e. winners, UEs etc. I mean, I wrote down the stats for the first set...

Tim said...

I need to figure out how to put in smilies. @Julia and @Istabraq on the fact they didn't update stats at the end of the match.

I think you may be right on some of it. Yea, 59% seems too high on first serve, especially if that was listed after the first set. The break points listed is correct for the whole match, however. It shows 4/9 for Nalby and 1/4 for Moya.

Julia said...

I think the stats for the match are correct - just not when it comes to his first serve. ;)

John said...

Very impressive match. Footwork and movement were good. Groundstrokes were excellent, particularly the forehand. David definitely hit lots of winners. Serving was not so good. I think you're right, Julia, it had to be less than 59%.

Ciccio(NY) said...

David spoke of a 'weird wind' on the court in the middle of the second set that affected his game.

Ciccio(NY) said...

Baghdatis 62/62 to a very erratic Gonzalez. It seems we will have a battle of 'gordos' in the final with Marcos and Davis.

If anybody would like to download the match between Nalbandian and Moya, you can doing so by clicking on this link:

note: it is the download from the stream, so the same bad quality. But it is something.

Just to start sharing all the things about today's match, I will leave two videos:
-The first one: The only point of the match I record... it was when David make the "Gran Willy"!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOnFPZCgHjw

-And the second video (Julia, here I'm leaving some work for you...), Carlos Moya in the press conference praising David (in spanish)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1Sg73kwXQc

Soon, coming up some photos ;)
Sorry for the delay with the pics, but I arrive home from the matches around 2am... and now its 3.50am and I still have to select and edit them :s
