San Juan Update

Although so far, nothing has been officially confirmed, it now seems more and more likely that David will play his first match not at the Copa Argentina in Buenos Aires but a week earlier in San Juan. There, David's former coach Martin Jaite is currently setting up an exhibition, the Copa Transandina, scheduled to take place on December 12/13 and featuring four players: David, Gaston Gaudio, Guillermo Cañas and Nicolas Massu (with Gaudio and Cañas apparently replacing Juan Monaco and Fernando Gonzalez).

According to this article from a San Juan newspaper website, it has yet to be decided at which venue the event will be held. But apparently, the organizers are still confident that they'll be able to release an official statement about the exhibition and its participants next week or, at the latest, by the end of October. The article also claims Gonzalo Bonadeo (you may remember him from the "TV interview", he was the one who interviewed David) to have announced that Argentine TV channel TyC Sports will be broadcasting the Copa Transandina. So there is hope that in case David plays his first match(es) in San Juan, there might be a stream...
But - nothing has been confirmed yet.

What has been confirmed, however, is that David will play the Copa Argentina.
Here's a new logo they've come up with for this year's edition:

Thanks for the update, Julia. Great news! I want him to get as much practice as he could and test that hip before Australia. Can't wait to see him back, it's been a long boring season without him.

In other news, David looks like a serial-killer in that pic.

This is great news, Julia - the Day of The Comeback is getting closer and closer. Things must be going well (so far, fingers crossed) if David has confirmed the Copa Argentina and is now planning to play an even earlier event.

I agree with Nancy - the more match practice David gets before the serious stuff, the better.

The "serial killer" look - oh dear, it is a bit (though I think the logo is great). But actually David has come off a lot better than most in those new ATP mug shots - some of them look like complete thugs. ;-) I think the photographers must have asked them to make scary faces.

So there might be a broadcast of San Juan after all? Is it a newly created exhibition by any chance?

Yeah, it's good news. :)
Looks like David wants to get back on court... And the more matches he's able to play before going to Australia, the better. To get match practice and hopefully gain confidence, both in his shots and his ability to move well, again.
Well, for now things definitely seem to be going very well. And yeah, Nancy, you're not the only one who can't wait to see him back. :)

Krystle, as far as I know it's a new event. And that article says that it'll be on Argentine TV. Actually, I'm pretty sure that it will be, if David plays.

About the logo - interesting choice of pics, there... And I'm not just talking about David's ATP mug shot. I agree with Istabraq, a lot of the other players look far worse in those new ATP shots than he does. Great attempt at creating a new image...

Aside from the poor photography, I think the ATP don't seem to realize that the players aren't actors, they can't really manipulate their expressions that well to make it look good.

Thanks for all of the updates, Julia - I've been MIA in commenting but have been reading the blog regularly.

Great news that David will be back soon. I've really missed him. This season has been so dull without him and also with Rafa's absences.

I think there is a good chance that the Copa Argentina might get extra TV coverage this year as I am presuming it will be Safin's swansong. Hope springs and all that anyway...!

Hi joyce63. Good to see you again. :)

Marat - well, I thought Paris was going to be his farewell tournament. Always good for a surprise, until the very end...
There was a stream for the Copa Argentina the last two years. It gets shown on Argentine TV anyway. The question is whether someone will stream it, for example on justin.tv... We'll see. Of course, I'll try my best to find a stream (also for San Juan if he plays there) and I'll post any available stream here.

- Yeah, it's been way too long since I've had to go "stream-hunting" in order to watch David play. :)
